Former Florida State Seminoles quarterback, EJ Manuel, fired back at criticism of the Texas Longhorns’ Arch Manning as the 21-year-old prepares to lead the team in the NCAA.
A recent critique of the youngster, nephew to Peyton and Eli, from Steve Spurrier has proven highly controversial and has ignited sharp responses across the college football world – including from Manuel, working as an analyst for ESPN.
Arch Manning reveals that he’s tired of getting advice from his dad as he can’t catch a break
Spurrier, who has never shied away from provocative commentary, questioned the hype as the former Florida head coach took the opportunity to cast doubt ahead of Texas’ campaign in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
“People picking Texas to win the SEC in football,” Spurrier said to the Another Dooley Noted Podcast. “They’ve got Arch Manning already winning the Heisman, too.
“And my question is, if he was this good, how come that they let Quinn Ewers play all the time last year?”
His comments, while in line with his trademark sharp-tongued style, raised eyebrows due to both their timing and subject, and led to Manuel to bite back at the former Heisman Trophy winner.
Manuel backs Manning
Manuel, who played for Florida State from 2008 to 2012, took issue with Spurrier’s remarks. In a pointed response, and emphasized the importance of context and patience in developing quarterbacks.
He also noted that Ewers led Texas to two College Football Playoff appearances and a Big 12 championship, and had not underperformed – making it unreasonable to expect Manning to take over without cause.
“Coach Spurrier, what are we talking about here, man?” Manuel said on ESPN’s Get Up. “I don’t think it correlates to say a player that gets drafted ahead of a new, incumbent starter is indicative of that new starter not being that good.
“When you look at the quarterback situation at Texas coming into the 2024 season, Quinn Ewers didn’t lose his job, he didn’t play bad enough to say, ‘Hey Arch, you’re going to now be our guy.’
“Considering in 2023 their lead, winning the Big 12, they make it to the CFP – that was all through the arm and the play of Quinn Ewers.
“I was kind of shocked to hear Coach Spurrier say this, especially somebody who has coached the quarterback position, played quarterback and knows how important patience and opportunity is, as well.
“I think Arch Manning is going to shut up all the haters. He’s going to have a huge opportunity against Ohio State.”
Manning names NFL idols
While public debate swirls, Arch remains focused, despite the weight of his surname – which also belongs to two Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks.
But when asked recently about which quarterbacks he studies, Manning named Josh Allen and Joe Burrow, not his famous uncles, as he models his game on the modern QB before his own NFL journey starts.
“I’m watching a lot of Josh Allen and Joe Burrow right now,” Manning said. “Those are my guys.
“They’re dogs. I’m watching some of their college film right now, just good players, elite competitors, fun to watch.
“[Allen] is just the ultimate football player. If something’s not there, he’s going to make something happen and do whatever he can to make his team win.”
