Ronald Acuña Jr. homers in first rehab game on the night Braves reach .500

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves reached .500 for the first time all season, and did it on the same night that Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a home run in the first game of his minor-league rehab assignment.Yeah, it was a good night for the Braves, a great one even, in a season that’s not been brimming with those.Advertisement“Huge,” said rookie catcher Drake Baldwin, who had three hits, including a double and a two-run homer to help beat the Washington Nationals 5-2 and become the fifth team in MLB history to start a season 0-7 and get to .500 at any point in that season. “Since that 0-7 streak, it seems like we started to get going.“We faced some tough teams early, but getting back to .500, like, we’re right back in it. Jeremie Frimpong and Liverpool: What we’re hearing – and what he offers

Liverpool are lining up a potential deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong as they plan for a future without Trent Alexander-Arnold.The 24-year-old has emerged as one of the most in-demand right-backs in Europe, with 14 goals and 12 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions last season as he helped Leverkusen go unbeaten to clinch the Bundesliga title.AdvertisementHe extended his contract with Leverkusen last year until 2028 but looks set to depart the club this summer and has a release clause of around €35million (£29.6m/$39.3m).The relatively low value of that release clause, and the fact it can be executed cleanly, appeals to Liverpool.Frimpong’s status as a ‘homegrown’ player under UEFA regulations — he spent nine years at Manchester City from the age of nine, having turned down the chance to join Liverpool’s academy as it was further away from […]

Rebecca Lowe: Crystal Palace are my lifelong love. Winning the FA Cup would mean everything

Over the last few weeks, I have dared to dream.I’ve contemplated Marc Guehi, Crystal Palace’s captain, going up to the Royal Box at Wembley, sporting that wonderfully sheepish smile of his, and sharing a word with Prince William before he grasps the FA Cup and lifts it to the crowd. The noise. The sea of red and blue balloons. The tears. The unbridled joy. I’ve imagined it all.AdvertisementTo be honest, I’ve been struggling to think of much else.Palace, my team, are in their third FA Cup final and only Manchester City — ‘only’, she says — stand between us and a first major trophy. Every Palace fan out there will have their own reason why this means so much. For me, it would be the culmination of a 36-year journey I’ve shared with my father. All those dreams and hopes […]

Coppa Italia final: Reijnders and Milan have shot at redemption, while Bologna chase first trophy since 1974

Smoke will plume into the Roman sky again on Wednesday night. The conclave will move from St Peter’s to the Stadio Olimpico, where a group of calciatori (22 footballers) will take the place of cardinals and decide who gets to stand triumphant on a balcony amid a cheering crowd.Less than a week after an American was elected Pope for the first time, Milan and Bologna have the opportunity to hold the golden chalice known as the Coppa Italia after what feels like an eternity. Milan haven’t laid hands on it since 2003 when Paolo Maldini thrust it into the air just days after hoisting the Champions League trophy at Old Trafford. For Bologna, the wait has been even longer — so long that Christian Vieri’s father, Bob, was part of the team that won a penalty shootout against Palermo in […]

Ashley Fletcher: The footballer who stared into the abyss and found a way back

Ashley Fletcher sat in a darkened car park for 45 minutes, wondering how his career had reached this point. The 29-year-old was emotionally crushed as he forlornly looked into the distance. Having been tipped for stardom when coming through the ranks at Manchester United alongside Marcus Rashford, he played in the Premier League with West Ham United before joining Middlesbrough for £6.5million. AdvertisementThen Fletcher’s career took a nomadic turn. There was a loan at Sunderland, then a permanent switch to Watford in 2021. Fletcher only made six appearances during his three years at Vicarage Road, which encompassed less than impressive loans to New York Red Bulls in MLS, Wigan Athletic and Sheffield Wednesday. He joined League One side Blackpool in July on a two-year deal after the expiry of his contract at Watford — and knew he had a point to prove.
