Acht Monate nach dem Aus auf Schalke hat Marc Wilmots (56) wieder einen Job.
Am Dienstag gab Standard Lüttich bekannt, dass der ehemalige Schalker Sportdirektor beim Belgien-Klub seine Arbeit beginnt. Für Wilmots ist es ein Comeback beim Ex.

Bereits in der Vergangenheit war Wilmots für die Belgier tätig, als Spieler lief er zwischen 1991 und 1996 163 Mal für Standard Lüttich auf. 1993 gewannen sie gemeinsam den Pokal, 80 Tore erzielte er insgesamt für den Klub. Jetzt ist er wieder da.
Wilmots: „Ich freue mich auf die Zusammenarbeit mit Giacomo Angelini (Geschäftsführer; d.Red.) und Pierre François (Generalmanager; d.Red.). Ich komme, um aufzubauen, mein Wissen weiterzugeben und diesem Verein, den ich liebe, zu helfen, den Platz zurückzuerobern, den er verdient. Standard hat enormes Potenzial. Gemeinsam, mit Bescheidenheit und harter Arbeit, werden wir es wachsen lassen.“ Der Klub beendete die Saison mit 39 Punkten auf Platz 7.

Marc kennt die DNA von Standard perfekt. Er hat nicht nur die nötige Felderfahrung, sondern auch die Siegermentalität.“

Generalmanager François: „Seine natürliche Führungsstärke, sein Netzwerk, das insbesondere durch die von ihm betreuten Red Devils aufgebaut wurde, und seine Kenntnisse des internationalen Fußballs werden für die Strukturierung und Weiterentwicklung des Vereins auf allen Ebenen von entscheidender Bedeutung sein.“
Zuletzt war Wilmots bei Zweitligist Schalke tätig, im September 2024 musste er dort zusammen mit Trainer Karel Geraerts gehen. Bis wann sein Vertrag jetzt in Belgien läuft, ist nicht bekannt.
