Yankees sign veteran Anthony DeSclafani to boost starting pitching depth

SEATTLE — The New York Yankees’ pitching reserves became deeper Tuesday.

They signed righty Anthony DeSclafani to a minor-league deal and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

DeSclafani didn’t pitch in the majors last year due to right flexor tendon surgery. He spent all season on the injured list with the Minnesota Twins.

DeSclafani, 35, has pitched parts of nine seasons in the majors. He has a 4.20 ERA over 180 games (169 starts). In 2023, he made 18 starts (19 games) with the San Francisco Giants, posting a 4.88 ERA.

DeSclafani didn’t pitch this spring. It’s unclear how long it’ll be until the New Jersey native can pitch.

He had his best season in 2021, when he went 13-7 with a 3.17 ERA in 31 starts for the Giants. In January 2024, the Giants traded DeSclafani, Mitch Haniger and cash to the Seattle Mariners for starting pitcher Robbie Ray. Three weeks later, the Mariners traded DeSclafani, Justin Topa, Gabriel González, Darren Brown and cash to the Twins in exchange for Jorge Polanco.

The Yankees could use the depth. Luis Gil (lat strain) likely won’t be ready until July. Gerrit Cole (Tommy John surgery) won’t pitch this season. They just designated veteran Carlos Carrasco for assignment, though he accepted being outrighted to Triple A. Lefty Ryan Yarbrough has seemingly jumped into the back end of the rotation, behind Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, Will Warren and Clarke Schmidt.

The Yankees made other roster moves Tuesday. They put Oswaldo Cabrera on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left ankle and activated DJ LeMahieu, who had been out all season with a calf strain. Cabrera suffered the injury trying to score on a sacrifice fly in Monday night’s win over the Mariners at T-Mobile Park and was taken off the field via ambulance.

E continuou: — Por conta do primeiro tempo e […]
