Die Nacht war kurz für die Löwen Braunschweig.

Nach dem 90:94 bei den Fit/One Würzburg Baskets im zweiten Play-off-Viertelfinale (Stand: 1:1) falteten sich die müden Spieler in den Bus und rollten die gut 350 Kilometer nach Hause, bevor sie gegen 2 Uhr in ihre Betten fielen.

Play-offs bedeuten Reise-Stress! Und genau darum ist in der Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga jetzt ein Streit um den Modus entbrannt!

[–>Seit Corona wurden die Best-of-5-Serien (wer drei Siege hat, gewinnt) im Modus 2-2-1 gespielt. Heißt: Die besser platzierte Mannschaft begann mit zwei Heimspielen. Dann reiste der Tross zum anderen Team. Sollte ein entscheidendes fünftes Spiel notwendig werden, hätte wieder die bessere Mannschaft Heimrecht.

Doch diese Saison ist die BBL zum „alten“ 1-1-1-System zurückgekehrt, bei dem immer abwechselnd gespielt wird.

„Ich halte davon sehr, sehr wenig. Das ist meiner Meinung nach kompletter Blödsinn“, sagte Rostock-Profi Philipp Hartwich (29) im Podcast „Dyn Timeout“. „Für uns Spieler ist das Horror. Das macht am Ende auch das Produkt nicht besser. Denn Reisestrapazen sind das Number-One-Ding, das die Leistung runterzieht. Ich wäre ein sehr großer Freund davon, dass wir wieder auf 2-2-1 zurückgehen.“

Durch die viele Reiserei geht aber nicht nur Erholungs- und Trainingszeit verloren. Auch im Sinne der von der Liga propagierten Nachhaltigkeit macht die Kilometerfresserei wenig Sinn. Dazu kommt fehlende Chancen-Gleichheit! Während die reichen Euroleague-Vertreter FC Bayern und Alba Berlin auswärts per Charter fliegen, müssen sich kleinere Klubs die Nächte im Bus um die langen Beine schlagen …

Ex-Profi Patrick Femerling (50) sieht darin allerdings kein Problem: „Ja, es bevorteilt das stärkere Team. Aber die Klubs, die oben in der Tabelle stehen, haben ja auch mehr investiert.“ Und auch MBC-Haudegen Akeem Vargas (35) will sich nicht beklagen: „Die Reiserei empfinde ich als Privileg, nicht als Belastung.“

Einer der lautesten Kritiker ist dagegen Ulm-Boss Dr. Thomas Stoll (57). Mit ironischem Spott sagt er: „Für uns als wokeste Organisation der BBL ist Nachhaltigkeit sooo wichtig. Bei 2-2-1 könnten wir mit unseren Lastenfahrrädern ganz entspannt einmal nach Berlin fahren.“

Dann wird er sachlich und verweist auf die Nachteile des 1-1-1-Modus für Fans und Sponsoren: „Bei 1-1-1 spielt die schlechter platzierte Mannschaft meist nur unter der Woche, wogegen die besser platzierte Wochenendspiele hat. Bei 2-2-1 haben beide Teams ein Wochenendspiel und eines unter der Woche.“

Zudem stört Stoll, dass die Play-offs auf sechs Wochen ausgedehnt werden. Auch Albas Aufbauspieler Martin Hermannsson (30) sieht den Kaugummi-Spielplan kritisch: „Normalerweise geht es schneller, jetzt hat man ein paar Tage mehr zum Regenerieren. Aber eigentlich möchte man als Profi gleich wieder raus, im Zwei-Tages-Rhythmus spielen.“

Stolls Fazit: „Ich selber finde den 2-2-1 Modus deutlich besser, da er rein ergebnistechnisch keinen wirklichen Unterschied macht, aber die Play-offs wie in der NBA deutlich enger getaktet werden können.“

Für den alten Modus spricht an Standorten mit Multifunktionsarenen, dass dort nicht immer gleich Mehr-Tages-Blöcke an Terminen freigehalten werden müssen.
