Clayton Kershaw, who missed the first two months of the season recovering from knee and toe surgeries, spun his best outing on Sunday, firing five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in a 7-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Perhaps he had some underlying motivation.
Prior to Sunday’s series finale, the Cardinals played a throwback video of Matt Adams’ go-ahead three-run home run in Game 4 of the 2014 National League Division Series — one that was hit off of Kershaw. The homer ultimately clinched the series for St. Louis, which beat the Dodgers 3-2 to advance to the National League Championship Series. The video played on a loop for several minutes before starting lineups were announced.
Kershaw didn’t take too kindly to the video, telling Los Angeles-based reporters after the game, including Jeff Jones of MLB.com: “I think it’s a little bush league, but I don’t expect anything less from these guys. So, it’s no worries.”

Kershaw, a 10-time All Star and three-time Cy Young award winner, has appeared in 39 postseason games (including 32 starts) throughout his 18-year career and has won two World Series rings with the Dodgers. He also had the last laugh over the Cardinals on Sunday, as he picked up his first win of the season.

The Dodgers will hope this is a strong step in the right direction for Kershaw, as they desperately need him to stay healthy and effective. Over the weekend, Los Angeles placed right-hander Tony Gonsolin on the injured list for the second time this season. The move served as the Dodgers’ 20th IL designation so far this year and their 17th pitcher-related injury. Los Angeles’ rotation has been ravaged by injury, with three of its top free-agent signings in Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Roki Sasaki all currently shelved.
Having Kershaw back and posting zeroes will certainly help Los Angeles stay afloat in a juggernaut division. Los Angeles (39-27) currently holds a one-game lead over the San Diego Padres. The two teams will kick off a three-game series at Petco Park on Monday.
