When it comes to NFL superstars, few players carry the gravitas or track record of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Travis Kelce could be set up in a well-intentioned trap by Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs
The two-time MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion has already cemented himself among the sport’s greats, but if this offseason is any indication, he may be gearing up for his most motivated campaign yet.
Despite his accolades, Mahomes has found himself at the center of criticism and commentary over the last few months, some from surprising sources.

From former players to national analysts, Mahomes has become a target for offseason slander. While it may seem harmless on the surface, history has shown that giving Mahomes bulletin board material rarely ends well for the rest of the NFL.
A recent jab came from none other than former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. During a conversation on his Footbahlin podcast, Roethlisberger compared Mahomes to Aaron Rodgers and didn’t hold back.
“Well, I would take Aaron in his prime over Patrick now. I think Aaron Rodgers in his prime was one of the top few to ever do it – and so is Patrick Mahomes at his prime. Patrick Mahomes is just entering out of his prime, I think,” Roethlisberger said.
The quote raised eyebrows across the league, especially considering Mahomes is only 28 and remains in the thick of his career.
CBS rankings, local criticism add fuel to Mahomes’ competitive fire
It didn’t stop there. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin added to the disrespect by placing Mahomes at No. 6 in his post-draft quarterback rankings, behind Jayden Daniels, Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen.
While all five are undeniably talented, Mahomes‘ sustained excellence and postseason dominance make such a ranking seem far-fetched. That’s especially true considering Mahomes just led the Chiefs to a second straight Super Bowl victory in February.
If that wasn’t enough to stir Mahomes’ competitive side, even a local voice joined the chorus of criticism. Kansas City radio host Kevin Keitzman used his podcast, Kevin Keitzman Has Issues, to comment on Mahomes’ physical appearance, reacting to vacation photos that had surfaced online.
“Vacation photos are popping up of Patrick Mahomes and he’s fat,” Keitzman said. “I’m going to say it and I’m going to tell you the truth. That’s why you hit the play button. He’s an embarrassment… Dude, you’re fat. Your belly would be fat at my pool hanging out with us 60-year-olds.”
The body-shaming remark drew backlash from fans and even a response from Mahomes‘ personal trainer. While the quarterback hasn’t publicly addressed Keitzman‘s rant, the silence may be more dangerous than any rebuttal. Mahomes has long been known to let his play speak louder than any words.
