Filppula byl v elitní lize spjat především s Detroitem, v jehož dresu strávil deset ročníků a v roce 2008 s ním získal Stanley Cup. Hrál také za Tampu Bay, Philadelphii a New York Islanders. S NHL se v roce 2021 rozloučil po 1056 zápasech základní části, v nichž nasbíral 530 bodů (197+333), dalších 166 utkání a 86 bodů přidal v play off.
Filppulův vrchol ve finské reprezentaci přišel v roce 2022, kdy jako kapitán dovedl národní tým k premiérovému olympijskému zlatu a poté i k titulu mistrů světa. Stal se tím jedním z třiceti hokejistů, kteří vyhráli MS, ZOH i NHL.
V té době už rodák z Vantaa působil v Servette Ženeva, s nímž se stal mistrem Švýcarska a vyhrál Ligu mistrů. Kariéru ukončil symbolicky v Jokeritu, v jehož dresu vyhrál druhou finskou ligu, ale neuspěl v baráži s Lahti.
