Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy will miss the rest of the season after sustaining an injury during Saturday’s 3-2 Copa del Rey final defeat by Barcelona.
Mendy, 29, started the game but had to be taken off for Fran Garcia after only 11 minutes having suffered an issue with Madrid confirming on Tuesday that the France international suffered a right quadriceps injury.

Mendy is now set to miss the remainder of 2024-25, with Madrid expecting him to also miss the newly-expanded Club World Cup, which commences on June 14 through to July 13.
The injury leaves Madrid light in defence for the rest of the campaign, David Alaba a doubt for Sunday’s home game against Celta Vigo and Antonio Rudiger out for around six weeks. Should Alaba miss the game, Garcia would be the only natural left-back available for head coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Madrid, though, are already looking at the left-back market with a view to potentially reinforcing the position this summer.
Milos Kerkez of Bournemouth is liked by Madrid, though he is highly-regarded by Premier League champions Liverpool, with Manchester City also admirers. Bournemouth value the 21-year-old at around three times the £15.5million ($20.8m; €18.2m) they paid for him two summers ago.
Madrid also like Benfica’s Alvaro Carreras, though his €50m release clause may prove prohibitive.
Miguel Gutierrez also remains an option for the capital club due to the €8m buy-back clause they inserted in the deal which took the 23-year-old to Girona in August 2022.
Madrid are considering adding a left-back due to Mendy’s continued injury issues — the Frenchman has struggled with fitness issues since joining in 2019 — and dissatisfaction with the performances of Garcia since he returned to the club in the summer of 2023. If Madrid were to add a left-back this summer, it would follow that one of Mendy or Garcia would depart to make room in the squad.
Mendy has made 31 appearances in all competitions this season. He returned from a nine-game absence to start in the Copa del Rey final before being withdrawn.
Madrid host Celta four points behind Barcelona and face their rivals in the final Clasico of the season on Sunday, May 11. They have the lost the previous three meetings between the sides this season.
