No, none of the San Francisco 49ers’ 17 incoming rookies play offensive tackle.
But the team is bringing in a familiar veteran, D.J. Humphries, to compete for the swing tackle spot. The 31-year-old, who spent nine seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, has agreed to terms on a one-year deal, his agency announced on Tuesday. Tuesday was the first day teams could sign free agents without the addition counting against the compensatory draft pick formula in 2026.

The 49ers’ situation at tackle has been well-documented.
Their left tackle, Trent Williams, hasn’t played a full season since 2013 and turns 37 in July. No one is certain how many more seasons he’ll play.
Right tackle Colton McKivitz, meanwhile, is only signed through the upcoming season. The only other tackles on the roster had been Spencer Burford, Austen Pleasants, Sebastian Gutierrez, Jalen McKenzie and Isaac Alarcon, all of whom either have no or little NFL experience at the position.
Judging by the players they scrutinized ahead of the draft, it seemed the team was planning to draft a tackle, perhaps on Day 2. But though they took a guard, Iowa’s Connor Colby, in the seventh round, they did not choose a tackle with any of their 11 selections and did not sign any rookies after the draft, either.

“There were a number of times that we were interested in adding (an offensive lineman) and it just didn’t come our way,” general manager John Lynch said Saturday. “And you’ve got to stay true to where you have guys graded, not take guys just to take them but to take guys that you’re interested in at that point. And it just never really aligned.”
Humphries was a first-round pick by the Cardinals in 2015. He’s played most of his career at left tackle and made the Pro Bowl in 2021. His 2022 season was marred by a back injury and he tore his ACL at the end of the 2023 season.
After the Cardinals released him, he was picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs in November and ended up playing two games at left tackle. Per Pro Football Focus, he gave up 11 quarterback pressures and three sacks in those contests.
The Chiefs didn’t re-sign Humphries in free agency, instead inking 49ers’ swing tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal. Kansas City also drafted a tackle, Josh Simmons, in the first round and signed another, Washington State’s Esa Pole, following the draft.
