The Vancouver Whitecaps continued their dominant start to 2025, reaching the final of the Concacaf Champions Cup with a commanding 3-1 win (5-1 on aggregate) at Inter Miami. The visitors weathered a ninth-minute goal from Spanish defender Jordi Alba, then broke out just after halftime with a barrage led by Brian White and emerging midfielder Sebastian Berhalter.

Vancouver becomes the third Canadian club to reach the continental club final, joining CF Montréal (then known as the Montréal Impact) in 2015 and Toronto FC in 2018. The Whitecaps will face a Mexican opponent, either Tigres or Cruz Azul, in the final on June 1. The other semifinal is level at 1-1 on aggregate leading into Thursday night’s second leg.
Coincidentally, the defeat sees Lionel Messi & Co. eliminated from the North and Central American continental club competition on the same day Cristiano Ronaldo and his Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr were eliminated from the Asian equivalent.
With the burden of pressure on them, Miami got off to a fast start after defending an early Vancouver corner. The Whitecaps struggled to get back into defensive shape after the ball was cleared, giving Miami — which led them to somewhat uncharacteristically break upfield with urgency. With the defense still unsettled, Messi threaded a need to find Luis Suárez at the edge of the box.
From there, the Uruguayan drew the focus of multiple defenders, leaving the left side of the box open for Alba. The left back quickly attempted a shot right at Whitecaps goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka’s legs, who tried to drop to ground to be better positioned for a save. Instead, the ball ricocheted off of his foot and into the net.

Miami nearly leveled things shortly after Vancouver kicked off, with Argentine midfielder Tadeo Allende collecting a pass from Messi before attempting a shot from within the box. This time, however, Takaoka comfortably dove and snagged the ball to prevent a second chance.
After the scare, Vancouver did well to re-establish itself in the match. The Whitecaps took the next two shots, forcing Oscar Ustari into his first saves of the night.
While Miami eased into action after half time, Vancouver took the initiative. In the 51st minute, a well-timed run left Berhalter unmarked in the same patch of grass where Alba scored his opener. He took an extra step toward the endline before squaring the ball back to White, whose backheel finish was reminiscent of Marcus Thuram’s in the “other” Inter’s Champions League game on Wednesday.

With the faithful at Chase Stadium already rattled, the Whitecaps quickly lowered the decibel level even more, save for the 300-plus Vancouver fans who made the trip. Emmanuel Sabbi timed his run to beat the Miami offside trap down the left flank, getting the ball into the box before a Miami defender poked the ball from his stride. It fell right to Berhalter, who calmly collected it and spotted Pedro Vite’s arrival at the edge of the box to notch his second assist and almost certainly extend the lead beyond Miami’s grasp.
Berhalter took it a step further in the 71st minute. Vancouver’s high press forced Miami into a turnover in their defensive third, and a pair of blocked shots fell to Berhalter’s feet for a right-footed finish just inside the box to give the Whitecaps a four-goal lead on aggregate.
The win is the latest in a sterling start to 2025 for Vancouver, who has been a class above the rest of MLS and is atop the league table. White and Berhalter will have bolstered their cases for USMNT inclusion, both among the most in-form Americans playing in any league these days.
