Colo-Colo handed 10-game supporter ban after fan deaths before Copa Libertadores tie

Chilean soccer club Colo-Colo must play five home matches in continental competition without fans and will also not be allowed supporters for the next five away matches.

The bans were confirmed by CONMEBOL, the organising body of the Copa Libertadores, after two teenage fans were killed in a crush ahead of a Copa Libertadores match last month.

Local police confirmed the deaths of an 18-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy following a confrontation between supporters and police ahead of Colo-Colo’s tie against Brazilian side Fortaleza on April 10.

Police general Alex Bahamondes told TVN that the perimeter fence of the stadium had become surrounded by “approximately 150 fans” ahead of the game.

Colo-Colo’s league derby match against Universidad de Chile, which had been scheduled to take place three days after that tie, was postponed as a mark of respect.

Prosecutor Francisco Morales, via Chilean media outlet Emol, said that an investigation has commenced into whether a police car was involved in the deaths.

Despite the incidents ahead of the match, the game kicked off and proceeded normally until its suspension in the 72nd minute, when a group of Colo-Colo fans invaded the pitch amid the situation.

CONMEBOL have awarded Fortaleza a 3-0 victory for the match, which was scoreless when it was abandoned, alongside sanctioning Colo-Colo supporters for a further 10 matches.

The first of the five-match home stadium ban has already been served, as the Santiago-based club drew 1-1 at home to Racing Club of Argentina in their Copa Libertadores group stage match on April 23.

Colo-Colo’s only remaining home group game is scheduled against Atletico Bucaramanga on May 30, preceded by trips to Fortaleza and Racing Club — for which they will be unable to bring away supporters.

The Chilean club are bottom of the group on two points, two behind third-place Fortaleza and Racing Club, with Atletico Bucaramanga leaders on five points.

Colo-Colo have also been fined $80,000 (£60,000) for the episode.

Giants GM reiterates Russell Wilson is their starter, says first-rounder Jaxson Dart will benefit from sitting

Getty Images Jaxson Dart was taken in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, at No. 25 overall, and while some first -ounders will be QB1 in their rookie year, the former Ole Miss quarterback will have to wait for his chance to start. The Giants added Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson to their roster this offseason and traded up to take Dart, adding him to a quarterback room that also includes former first overall pick Jameis Winston. Head coach Brian Daboll told reporters that Wilson "is our starter," saying, "that's how it'll be once we get started here in the spring." These Group of Five teams boosted College Football Playoff hopes with strong transfer portal hauls

Getty Images The NCAA transfer portal both gives and takes away from Group of Five programs. While schools at that level are liable to lose their top players to Power Four programs every year, the portal also allows those same schools to fill the holes by snagging athletes that may not have panned out at other programs or rising stars from the FCS level. This ability to rebuild a roster with experienced players is especially important in a 12-team College Football Playoff era where the Group of Five is guaranteed at least one automatic bid. Last season, Boise State rode star running back Ashton Jeanty to a Mountain West championship and a first-round bye in the playoff. While the increased opportunity is great, especially since the Group of Five was largely excluded from the previous playoff format, it still means that 65 […]

Why Cardinals expect Marvin Harrison Jr. to make huge jump in 2025: ‘Just wait until this guy plays this year’

Getty Images By most accounts, Marvin Harrison Jr.'s rookie season was a success. The fourth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Harrison caught 62 passes for 885 yards and eight touchdowns during his first season as a pro. As good as that season was, Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said he expects even bigger things from Harrison in 2025. "When the staff is in place, the jump from Year 1 to Year 2, I think that's where guys make a huge jump," Gannon told Adam Schein on SiriusXM's Mad Dog Sports Radio (via NFL Media). "This guy played unbelievable ball for us, but if you talk to him, he'd be the first to tell you, like, 'I need to get better at these couple things,' and, man, he has went to work on them.
