Julen Lopetegui é o novo técnico da seleção do Catar. O anúncio foi feito nesta quinta-feira pela Associação de Futebol do Catar (QFA). Com passagens por seleção da Espanha, Real Madrid e mais recentemente pelo West Ham, o treinador espanhol de 58 anos assinou contrato válido até 2027 e substituirá o compatriota Luis García no cargo.
A estreia do novo treinador da seleção catari acontecerá nas partidas restantes das eliminatórias da Copa do Mundo de 2026. Lopetegui estará no banco de reservas pela primeira vez contra o Irã, em casa, no dia 5 de junho de 2025, no Estádio Jassim Bin Hamad, do Al Sadd. Na sequência, enfrentará o Uzbequistão fora de casa, em Tashkent, no dia 10 de junho de 2025.
O treinador estava desempregado desde janeiro, quando foi demitido do West Ham após uma goleada por 4 a 1 sofrida diante do Manchester City, na Premier League. Segundo o comunicado da equipe inglesa, treinador, despedido com menos de oito meses no cargo, não correspondeu às ambições do clube.
Lopetegui comandou a equipe em 22 jogos, entre Premier League e Copa da Liga Inglesa. Ao todo, foram sete vitórias, cinco empates e dez derrotas desde que assumiu o West Ham.

“A Associação de Futebol do Catar (QFA) nomeou oficialmente o técnico espanhol Julen Lopetegui como novo treinador da seleção principal do país, com um contrato válido até 2027.
O contrato foi assinado por Mansoor Al Ansari, secretário-geral da QFA, na sede da associação na Torre Al Bidda, com a presença de Sua Excelência o Sr. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buainain, presidente da QFA. Lopetegui substitui o também espanhol Luis García no cargo.
A estreia de Lopetegui como treinador da seleção do Catar acontecerá nas partidas restantes das eliminatórias da Copa do Mundo FIFA 2026.
