Mio. Euro.

The MLB starting pitchers getting squeezed most by this season’s smaller strike zone
The strike zone is being enforced slightly differently this year, and it’s the smallest it’s ever been. But that doesn’t mean every pitcher is suffering equally from the tighter, perhaps more by-the-book zone. Some are getting it worse — and may continue to have a hard time due to how they pitch.Pitches taken inside the strike zone used to be called balls almost a quarter of the time at the beginning of the pitch-tracking era, and that number has been cut in half at least. But, because umpires are now being judged by a tighter buffer zone, the strike zone has shrunk. Throughout this season, there will be a few thousand fewer strikes because of how the umpires are judged. In the context of the history of the strike zone in the era of pitch tracking, considering that called strikes outside […]

A Kentucky Derby tradition not at Churchill Downs: Burgoo, a Bluegrass staple
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — If you’re hosting a Kentucky Derby party this weekend, you might be planning to serve food and drinks traditionally associated with the “Run for the Roses.” Derby pie, hot browns, Benedictine sandwiches, bourbon balls and, of course, mint juleps are the morning-line favorites. But if you wanted to dive deep into Bluegrass culture — especially if you’re expecting an infield-sized crowd — consider four words on your invitation. We’re having a burgoo. What’s a burgoo? Technically, it’s a meat-and-vegetable stew enjoyed in several areas of the South, widely believed to have originated in rural Kentucky. But no two burgoos are the same, and no standard recipe exists. Think vibes more than vittles. It began as a meal made by and for common folk, using whatever meats and vegetables they could scrounge up around the farm. That often meant mixing wild […]

Sometime Wednesday evening, South Allegheny High School athletic director Mike Crown saw that a fan had fallen out of the stands at that night’s Pittsburgh Pirates game. When he got up Thursday morning, Crown was reading more about the incident before work, and that’s when he saw the pictures and video.Advertisement“When I saw the tattoo on the shoulder,” Crown said, “I knew it was Kav.”It would be a few hours before officials confirmed that Kavan Markwood was the man who toppled over the railing at PNC Field and fell 21 feet onto the warning track below. Markwood was carted off the field and transported to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was said to be in critical condition.Crown didn’t need official confirmation of Markwood’s identity. He saw the tattoo, recognized another one of the people in the video with Markwood, and […]

Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman leaning on his starting pitcher DNA to be ‘that guy’
TORONTO — Jeff Hoffman spent his entire life trying to become a big league starter. From high school outings near Albany, NY, to three years at East Carolina University and all through the minor leagues, Hoffman had his eyes on the rotation. His MLB debut, an August 2016 start for the Colorado Rockies, was the dream fulfilled. But over the next five years, that dream slowly slipped away. The big righty posted a 5.64 ERA in his first 50 games started at the MLB level, fighting changed mechanics and the thin air of Colorado. The first-round pick and top prospect was traded, designated for assignment, and ultimately released to minor-league free agency.AdvertisementMost people don’t get a second shot at their dreams. But, after reestablishing himself as a late-inning reliever with the Philadelphia Phillies, Hoffman entered free agency last winter with another […]

Notre Dame incoming freshman Dallas Golden maximizes his time and effort to play both ways
Dallas Golden arrives at Flex & Flow Fitness every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5 a.m. For an athlete used to routines, the kind that helped grow him into a national prospect who signed with Notre Dame over offers from Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Georgia, this is simply the next one.The gym, located just south of the Tampa, Fla., airport, offers a stage for the former four-star prospect to play the part of an incoming freshman while still a senior at Berkeley Preparatory School. Golden may wish he could have done mid-year enrollment, but working out as the sun comes up in Florida will suffice for now. Golden will report to Notre Dame during the first full week of June, along with the 10 other incoming freshmen on the traditional summer schedule.“Can’t wait,” Golden said. “So excited.”Notre Dame should […]
