The fan who fell from the right-field stands at PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, during Wednesday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs has been identified as Kavan Markwood.
A South Allegheny School District spokesperson confirmed his identity to The Athletic and said Markwood is a 2022 graduate of South Allegheny High School. The city of Pittsburgh is located in Allegheny County (Pa.).

“The South Allegheny School District is keeping former student and standout athlete Kavan Markwood in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” spokesperson Laura Thomson said in a statement to The Athletic. “Kavan is best known for his resilience, strength, and kindness. He is a friend to all — someone who lifts others up and faces challenges with courage and grace.”
Markwood remains in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital after falling from a section of the stands with a rail above the 21-foot Clemente Wall in right field during the seventh inning of the game. He hit the wall before landing on the warning track, videos circulating on social media showed.
Markwood remained motionless while medical crews rushed to his aid and carried him off the field on a stretcher. He was transported to the hospital.
Wednesday’s game was delayed for several minutes after Markwood fell, but ultimately resumed.
The incident is being treated as accidental in nature, Pittsburgh Public Safety said Thursday morning.
“We are all deeply saddened and truly heartbroken after the terrible accident that occurred last night,” Pirates chairman Bob Nutting said in a statement Thursday. “It was one of the most difficult moments many of us have ever experienced. We are devastated.”
