Oilers hold off Kings to win series, advance to Round 2: Game 6 takeaways

EDMONTON — Same as it ever was.

For the fourth year in a row, the Edmonton Oilers have eliminated the Los Angeles Kings from the playoffs in the first round. The Oilers capped off the series with their fourth straight comeback victory, this time 6-4 in Game 6 on Thursday.

Though the first matchup in 2022 went the distance and required the Oilers to win the last two games, this one has to hurt the most for the Kings.

They dominated the Oilers at home, save for a few minutes of the third period of the opener, and took a commanding 2-0 lead to Northern Alberta. They proceeded to blow it from there.

There was the ill-advised coach’s challenge and then a quick strike from the Oilers’ power play in Game 3, followed by getting run out of the rink in the final frame of regulation and the overtime of Game 4. An awful Quinton Byfield turnover helped extend that contest to an extra period, too.

The Oilers controlled every aspect of Game 5 to push the Kings to the brink of elimination. It wasn’t perfect, but they managed to close the Kings out on their first try with a three-point effort from third-line winger Connor Brown leading the charge.

That’s the Oilers’ way, after all. They improved to 6-0 in close-out opportunities in Games 5 or 6 in the Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl era. They had two wins in those situations in last year’s playoffs, including a 4-3 decision over the Kings in Game 5 — coincidentally on May 1.

For the Kings, it was more of the same.

The other time they were booted by the Oilers was in six games in 2023. They held a 2-1 series lead and a 3-0 edge after the first period of Game 4 on home ice.

The Kings haven’t won a Game 6 to stave off elimination since 2014. That’s when they beat San Jose in the first round to cap off a stunning reverse sweep after being down 3-0 in the series. They also beat the Anaheim Ducks in the second round after trailing 3-2. That championship year remains their last set of playoff series victories.

The Kings had this one right in their grasp. As they let it slip away, the Oilers were there to snap it.

This story will be updated.

Jesús Luzardo, 7 starts into his Phillies career, keeps impressing

PHILADELPHIA — Kyle Schwarber had notions about Jesús Luzardo before the Philadelphia Phillies acquired him. Many Phillies players and coaches did, and they were curious how the 27-year-old lefty would embrace an atmosphere bursting with expectations. They had seen the tantalizing fastball and biting changeup. But it is easier when few are watching.AdvertisementLike other Phillies starters, Luzardo bides his time between innings in a hallway underneath the dugout at Citizens Bank Park. Schwarber, as the designated hitter, is often shuffling back and forth from the dugout to the batting cage. Sometimes he will cross paths with the starter. It happened during Friday night’s 3-2 Phillies win over the Arizona Diamondbacks as Luzardo labored through 5 1/3 innings.“He’s, like, staring a hole right through me,” Schwarber said. “I’m like, ‘Nice. I like that.’”The Phillies ran back much of their roster, a […]
