Nylander právě v den zápasu slavil 29. narozeniny. Na soupisce byl ale hráč s číslem 88 uveden mezi zdravými náhradníky Maple Leafs, zatímco v zápasové sestavě figuroval jeho o dva roky mladší bratr Alexander.
Chybička se vloudila, ovšem při dodatečné kontrole se na ni přišlo, a slavnější z bratrské dvojice tak mohl nastoupit a přispět značnou měrou k postupu Toronta do druhého kola proti obhájcům Stanley Cupu z Floridy.
„Pokud si před zápasem rozhodčí všimne, že některý hráč je v dresu, ale není uveden v oficiálním zápisu o utkání, upozorní na to provinivší se tým, aby mohla být provedena oprava. Trest se v takovém případě neukládá.“
Starší a slavnější ze švédské bratrské dvojice Maple Leafs tak mohl naskočit na křídle druhé lajny vedle Johna Tavarese a Maxe Paciorettyho. Její členové se zasloužili o tři ze čtyř gólů Toronta, které podruhé za tři roky prošlo do konferenčního semifinále. Před dvěma lety v něm podlehlo Floridě celkem jasně v pěti zápasech.
Maple Leafs měli štěstí, že se na chybu přišlo. Pokud by nebyla odhalena do začátku utkání, musel by být kamarád a bývalý spoluhráč Davida Pastrňáka stažen z ledu a Toronto už by ho nemohlo nikým nahradit.
Takhle je ale záměna jmen naštěstí pro Maple Leafs pouze úsměvnou historkou. Kouč Craig Berube při vysvětlování situace také poukázal na to, že Alexander Nylander byl mezi 14 hráči povolanými ze záložního týmu Toronto Marlies, jenž nedávno vypadl z play off AHL.
„Užijeme si postup a výhru, ale pak už se soustředíme na Floridu,“ řekl William Nylander. Příště už si ho s bráchou nejspíš nikdo z povolaných nesplete.
