Wie u.a.

Van Nistelrooy wants to stay as Leicester City manager. Is the feeling mutual?

Not many managers can survive a run of 17 defeats in 19 games, nine consecutive defeats at home without scoring a single goal or picking up just eight points from a possible 63.Add to that a single clean sheet, 49 goals conceded and 11 scored. Lucas Paqueta’s yellow card, the tears and his West Ham team-mates’ support

Lucas Paqueta dejectedly gazed at the turf with tears streaming down his face. Frustrated, he lifted his jersey to wipe away his tears after being consoled by captain Jarrod Bowen. Ruben Amorim has to prioritise Europe but the risk is a humiliating 17th-placed finish

To say nothing is riding on the remainder of Manchester United’s Premier League campaign is simply not true.Understandably, the club’s focus is on winning the Europa League and securing a route into next season’s Champions League, but a 4-3 defeat at Brentford now means there are only two points between them and 17th-placed West Ham United.AdvertisementAnd do not let the scoreline fool you into thinking this was a close game, either. Two late goals from United via Alejandro Garnacho and Amad masked a dominant home display.Still in 15th, United’s league campaign has been nothing short of disastrous. But to end up in 16th or 17th would be humiliating for such an expensively assembled squad.Even with that context in mind, however, it is difficult to say Ruben Amorim was wrong to make wholesale changes to his starting XI given the second […]

Wieffer was meant to be a key midfield signing for Brighton. Now he’s fourth-choice right-back. What’s going on?

It was not supposed to be like this for Mats Wieffer in his first season at Brighton & Hove Albion. One of the key signings last summer has finally got a run in the team as fourth-choice right-back, rather than his regular position in central midfield.Wieffer had an eventful 54 minutes on the pitch in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle at the Amex Stadium. He recovered from a shaky start to provide the assist for Yankuba Minteh’s goal, picked up a booking and was substituted by head coach Fabian Hurzeler to avoid the danger of receiving a red card.AdvertisementThe chaotic nature of Wieffer’s contribution was indicative of a campaign that has not gone according to plan for the 25-year-old Dutchman since a £25million ($33.2m) move from Feyenoord last July.Of the nine new signings made in last summer’s transfer window, costing nearly […]
