The Texas Rangers on Sunday continued their shakeup amid a slow start at the plate, announcing the dismissal of offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker. The club also placed outfielder Leody Tavares on outright waivers, a source told The Athletic.
Both Ecker and Tavares were members of the Rangers’ 2023 World Series championship team. But Texas (17-18) has started the season by scoring just 113 runs through its first 35 games, including the eight scored in Sunday’s 8-1 win over Seattle. The Rangers have scored more than three runs only twice in their last 12 games. Only the Colorado Rockies have scored fewer runs (106), and the Rockies started the season 6-28.

Taveras, 26, is hitting .241 with a .259 on-base average and .601 OPS. His best season at the plate was 2023, when he hit .266 with a .733 OPS. Any team that claims Taveras would assume the balance of his $4.75 million salary. If he is not claimed, he could either elect to become a free agent and thus forfeit his salary or be taken off the Rangers’ 40-man roster and sent to the minors.
If no team claims Taveras, he has the right to elect free agency as a player with three-plus years of his service. But if he does, he forfeits his salary. If he does not elect free agency, he is taken off the 40-man roster and reports to the minors.

The moves follow the demotion earlier this week of the struggling Jake Burger, who had been brought in last winter to bolster the offense.
