Texas arms Arch Manning with 1,600-yard backup as post-Ewers era begins

The Arch Manning era is officially underway in Austin – and Texas just handed him a powerful insurance policy.

Following the NFL draft departure of star quarterback Quinn Ewers, the Texas Longhorns wasted no time bolstering their QB depth, snagging former Troy signal-caller Matthew Caldwell from the transfer portal.

While Manning is now the clear face of the program, Caldwell brings a 1,600-yard résumé to back him up – giving Texas a seasoned safety net as it enters the 2025 season with sky-high expectations.

Caldwell, who only started the final five games of Troy’s 2024 regular season, still managed to make noise, throwing for 1,608 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions over 10 appearances.

Despite a turbulent quarterback carousel at Troy, Caldwell made the most of his late-season spotlight and now finds himself on one of the biggest stages in college football.

Texas has plenty of spare QBs

His arrival adds firepower to a Texas quarterback room that already includes Manning, Trey Owens, Joe Tatum, and Karle Lacey Jr. More importantly, it gives Manning a proven arm behind him – one capable of stepping in if things get rocky during the Longhorns’ grueling SEC campaign.

Manning already saw playing time in 2024, stepping in for an injured Ewers and starting key games against UL Monroe and Mississippi State. Ewers initially tried to play through a torn oblique suffered against Michigan, but the injury worsened in a following game against UTSA, forcing him to exit and opening the door for Manning’s ascent.

Will the Longhorns return to the playoffs?

The Longhorns, fresh off an 11-1 regular season and a trip to the SEC Championship Game, are eyeing bigger things in 2025. Although they fell to Georgia in a heartbreaking 22-19 overtime loss and bowed out in the College Football Playoff semifinals to national champion Ohio State, Texas has the pieces in place to make another deep run.

And with Arch Manning leading the charge – and now Matthew Caldwell riding shotgun – the Longhorns may just be getting started.

Texas opens its 2025 season with a blockbuster rematch against the Buckeyes on August 30.
