Wer in dieser Saison ins Fahrerlager der Formel 1 kommt, läuft als Erstes am Motorhome von McLaren vorbei. Die Anordnung orientiert sich an der Konstrukteurs-WM des letzten Jahres – der Gewinner steht ganz vorne.
Daran wird sich wohl auch 2026 nichts ändern. Zu dominant sind die Engländer aktuell unterwegs. Am Sonntag gewann Oscar Piastri (24) in Miami vor seinem Team-Kollegen Lando Norris (25). Es war der fünfte Sieg der „Papayas“ (Farbe der Autos wie die der Frucht) im sechsten Rennen.
[–>Da war nicht immer so. Nach den acht Konstrukteurs-Titeln bis 1998 und dem letzten Fahrer-Titel 2008 (Hamilton) folgte der gnadenlose Absturz.
2015 landete McLaren auf dem vorletzten Platz der Teams, nur noch unterboten von Pleite-Rennstall Marussia. Tiefpunkt war ein verzweifelter Motorentausch beim Rennen in Belgien, der den beiden Fahrern Alonso und Button eine Strafe von 105 (!) Startplätzen einbrachte.
Zwei Jahre später verzichtete ein frustrierter Alonso auf den Grand Prix in Monaco, um zeitgleich beim Indy 500 in den USA anzutreten.
Dazu kam eine finanziell prekäre Situation. Dem Team liefen die Sponsoren in Scharen davon. Die Rennautos waren in diesen Jahren fast völlig frei von Werbung. Im Corona-Jahr stand McLaren dann endgültig kurz vor der Insolvenz.
Dass der Rennstall heute wieder ganz oben steht, ist vor allem einem Mann zu verdanken: Zak Brown (53/Foto r.). Der Ami wurde 2016 CEO von McLaren. Gewann neue Geldgeber. Und holte sich viel Expertise ins Team.

Machte erst den Deutschen Andreas Seidl (49) zum Teamchef. 2023 dann Andrea Stella (54), der einst Michael Schumacher (56) bei Ferrari betreut hatte.
Dazu holte er Peter Prodromou (56) für Aerodynamik, David Sanchez (45) für Fahrzeug-Performance und Neil Houldey (47) für Engineering und Design.
Und er lockte 2024 Ingenieur-Legende Rob Marshall (56) von Red Bull zu McLaren. RB-Boss Christian Horner (51) scherzte damals: „Das, was Rob dort verdient, ist wahrscheinlich die Hälfte des Budgets von McLaren.“
Mittlerweile dürfte ihm das Lachen vergangen sein. Auch weil die neue Technik im McLaren-Hauptquartier in Woking/England als richtungsweisend gilt. Der neue Windkanal wurde 2023 in Betrieb genommen. Den Vorgänger hatte man 2010 stillgelegt. Die Autos wurden danach im gemieteten Toyota-Tunnel in Köln getestet.

Vorbei! Vor wenigen Jahren stellte man sich im Rennstall die Frage, ob es überhaupt noch eine Zukunft für McLaren in der Formel 1 gibt. Heute wird nur noch eine Frage gestellt: Welcher unserer Fahrer soll eigentlich Weltmeister werden?
Denn eine klare Nummer 1 bei den Piloten hat die Nummer 1 bei den Teams aktuell nicht.
