Frankfurts Linksaußen Nathaniel Brown (21) ist einer der Überraschungsstars der Saison. Im Interview spricht er über ein Modellauto als Motivation, Marmoush und seine Mama.
SPORT BILD: Herr Brown, in den Regionalmedien Ihrer Heimat werden Sie auch als „Vilstal-Schreck aus Kümmersbruck“ bezeichnet. Wie bekommt man diesen Titel?
Nathaniel Brown: Gute Frage (lacht). Ich war da fünf oder sechs Jahre alt. Ich habe eine Menge Tore geschossen und bin auf Turnieren häufig zum besten Spieler gewählt worden. Damals habe ich noch auf der Zehn gespielt und nicht als Linksverteidiger. Der Schreck war ich dementsprechend für die anderen Teams …
[–>Vergangene Saison standen Sie noch für den 1. FC Nürnberg auf dem Platz und haben gegen Osnabrück und Elversberg gespielt. Mittlerweile sind Sie Stammspieler in der 1. Liga und auf dem Weg in die Champions League. Müssen Sie sich manchmal kneifen?
Ja! Es gibt Momente, in denen ich mir denke: Das kann jetzt gar nicht real sein, das ist viel zu schön. Zum Beispiel, als ich mein erstes Bundesliga-Tor beim 7:2 gegen Bochum gemacht habe. Meine Mutter war da auch im Stadion. Ich konnte das erst gar nicht glauben. Als Can Uzun später auch noch ein Tor erzielt hat und wir gemeinsam unseren Jubel aus Nürnberger Zeiten gemacht haben, war das wie im Traum.
Apropos: Träumen Sie auch manchmal davon, dass Ihr Kumpel Can Uzun bald seinen Führerschein hat, damit Sie nicht mehr sein „Chauffeur“ sein müssen?
Er hat gewettet, dass er ihn bis zu seinem 19. Geburtstag hat. Ich habe dagegengehalten und gewonnen! Das ist jetzt ein halbes Jahr her. Ich sehe da irgendwie kein Ende (lacht).

Wie erklären Sie sich Frankfurts Erfolg in dieser Saison?
Es macht einfach riesig Spaß, wir sind ein großartiges Team. Morgens stehe ich auf und freue mich auf die Kabine. Es ist immer was los, es ist immer Spaß dabei. Selbst mit den älteren und erfahreneren Spielern wie etwa Trappo (Kevin Trapp; d. Red.), Mario (Götze), Timmy (Chandler), Rasmus (Kristensen) und Arthur (Theate) könnte ich jederzeit rausgehen und Kaffee trinken.
Für Sie persönlich lief der Saisonbeginn allerdings nicht so gut. In den ersten sieben Ligaspielen kamen Sie nicht zum Einsatz, wurden in der Hinrunde zudem nicht für den Europa-League-Kader nominiert.
Als ich damals den Anruf vom Trainer (Dino Toppmöller) bekam, dass ich nicht im Kader stehe, war das zunächst hart. Aber danach dachte ich mir: Vielleicht ist es besser, dann kann ich in Ruhe an meinen Schwächen arbeiten. Am Ende hat mir gutgetan, dass ich mich komplett auf die Liga fokussieren konnte und keine Englischen Wochen hatte. Trotzdem war ich in dem Moment natürlich enttäuscht.
Mittlerweile sind Sie auf der linken Seite gesetzt. Haben Sie sich schon die Champions-League-Hymne als Klingelton runtergeladen?
Nein, das noch nicht. Aber ich habe die Hymne natürlich schon als Kind gehört. Vor allem an der Konsole, bei FIFA im Karrieremodus. Es ist unglaublich, wenn ich daran denke, dass ich da bald selbst auflaufen könnte.
In welchem Stadion würden Sie dann gerne mal spielen?
Ich war als Kind ein großer Fan von Messi und Ronaldinho. Deswegen wäre es mein Traum, im neuen Camp Nou aufzulaufen.
Ihr Gegenspieler wäre dann vermutlich Barcelonas Wunderkind Lamine Yamal. Wie würden Sie ihn aufhalten?
Da müsste ich mir noch etwas Gutes ausdenken. Der spielt in einer ganz anderen Dimension. Ein Ausnahmetalent.
Theoretisch könnten Sie auch auf Ihren Ex-Kollegen Omar Marmoush von Manchester City treffen. Hat der eine Chance gegen Sie?
Ich muss zugeben: Im Training ist er schon ein-, zweimal an mir vorbeigekommen (lacht). Bis wir dann aber gegeneinander spielen, habe ich mich wahrscheinlich noch mal verbessert. Ich fürchte, er aber auch …
Gucken Sie seine Spiele?
Ja. Bevor er nach England gewechselt ist, habe ich weniger Premier League geschaut. Dafür jetzt umso mehr. Das Spiel gegen Newcastle, in dem er drei Tore geschossen hat, habe ich mit Can zusammen geschaut. Wir haben uns beide total für ihn gefreut.

Als aufstrebender deutscher Linksverteidiger sind Sie auch interessant für Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann. Gab es Kontakt?
Bislang noch nicht.
Würden Sie denn im Sommer lieber die EM mit der U21 spielen oder das Nations League Final Four mit der A-Nationalelf?
Geht auch beides? Dann würde ich das gerne machen (lacht). In erster Linie freue ich mich sehr auf die EM. Ich glaube, wir können ein Turnier spielen wie die U21, die 2009 die Europameisterschaft gewonnen hat, u. a. mit Özil, Hummels und Boateng. Wir haben einen super Zusammenhalt.
Ihr Vater ist Amerikaner. Rein theoretisch könnten Sie auch für die USA auflaufen.
Ja, das stimmt. Aber ich will jetzt erst mal die U21-EM spielen, danach kann man weiterschauen. So oder so: Die WM 2026 ist ein Ziel, das ich habe.
Neben Ihrem Fernseher soll ein Modellauto stehen, das Ihnen Ihr Berater zur Motivation geschenkt hat. Können Sie das mal erklären?
Das stimmt. Er hat mir zu Weihnachten eine Mercedes G-Klasse als Modell geschenkt. Er weiß, dass das mein Traumauto ist und meinte: „Jetzt siehst du es jeden Tag und kannst daran arbeiten, dir diesen Traum zu verwirklichen.“

Und funktioniert der Motivations-Trick?
Ich gucke da tatsächlich jeden Tag drauf und bin motiviert. Ich mag Autos sehr gerne. Und eine G-Klasse wäre schon toll. Mal gucken, ob das in Erfüllung geht. Ich werde auf jeden Fall daran arbeiten.
Stimmt es, dass Ihre Mutter sich mehr darüber freut, dass Sie mit Mario Götze zusammenspielen als Sie selbst?
Ja, das stimmt (lacht). Sie fragt mich auch immer nach Mario und will auf dem neuesten Stand sein. Mario Götze ist halt Mario Götze. Das ist nicht nur mein Mitspieler, sondern „Der Weltmeister“. Aber auch von den anderen Spielern aus meiner Mannschaft will sie immer Bilder haben und freut sich, wenn wir was zusammen unternehmen.
Schneidet sie auch Zeitungsartikel aus?
Ja, klar! Meine Mutter ist da im positiven Sinne verrückt. Die ganze Kühlschranktür ist schon voll mit Artikeln (lacht).
