Round 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs continues on Wednesday when the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Florida Panthers, and the Dallas Stars head to Winnipeg to face the Jets. The Maple Leafs beat Florida 5-4 in the first game of a possible seven but are the underdogs in Game 2 while favored to win the series. The Jets and Stars begin their second-round series on Wednesday, and the odds favor the Stars to take the series, naturally, as Dallas is the favorite to win the Stanley Cup at +450.

Florida Panthers at Toronto Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs edged their division rivals in a back-and-forth Game 1, but their 5-4 win was overshadowed by the loss of goaltender Anthony Stolarz in the second period. Stolarz took a forearm to his head from Panthers forward Sam Bennett; he returned to the game for a couple of minutes of play before skating to the bench and vomiting during the TV timeout. Bennett, no stranger to a controversial hit, wasn’t penalized on the play and isn’t likely to be. James Mirtle argues he should be. Joseph Woll played in relief of Stolarz and saved 17 of the 20 shots he saw. Whether their No. 1 goaltender is good to go for Game 2 remains to be seen, though Leafs coach Craig Berube said, “he’s doing good.”
The Leafs came out flying with an early lead in Game 1 and a strong showing from their top two lines, who put five goals past Sergei Bobrovsky on 30 shots. The Panthers came out strong in the second half, but Woll and the Leafs held their own. Toronto played far better than during the last postseason matchup with Florida in 2023, when the Panthers won in five games, and the Leafs didn’t score more than two goals in a game during the entire series.

The Jets pulled off an amazing series win over the St. Louis Blues, scoring twice in the final two minutes (including with under two seconds to go) in Game 7 to tie it up. Then, they completed the comeback in double overtime, thanks to captain Adam Lowry. Murat Ates shed some light on Lowry’s OT heroics and the emotional responses around it.
Meanwhile, the Stars also pulled off an extraordinary comeback. Deadline addition Mikko Rantanen scored a third-period hat trick against his former Colorado Avalanche in a third-period four-goal rally to win Game 7. Pierre LeBrun said it best: “Watch out, NHL, the Stars are getting healthy.”

However, both teams are still missing key players. The Jets are without Mark Scheifele and defenseman Josh Morrissey, and the Stars are still missing forward Jason Robertson and defender Miro Heiskanen.
These games could be tight, as the Jets and Stars boast top goaltenders in Connor Hellebuyck and Jake Oettinger. Hellebuyck’s Round 1 was shaky (like many of his postseason performances), but Game 7 was something of a redemption arc for him and his Winnipeg teammates.
