Mezinárodní hokejová federace IIHF v únoru sice potvrdila, že kvůli pokračující invazi na Ukrajinu bude i světový šampionát příští rok bez Ruska a Běloruska. Pokud ale válka skončí, IIHF bude situaci s vyloučenými týmy znovu posuzovat a je možné, že jejich suspendaci zruší.
Rusku a Bělorusku byl po vyloučení z mezinárodní scény zmrazen bodový zisk do žebříčku IIHF, v němž tak dál figurují na druhém, respektive šestnáctém místě. Ukrajina je až na 27. pozici.
Pokud tedy na Ukrajině bude v nejbližších měsících dosaženo míru, existuje možnost, že IIHF vrátí Rusko do MS už v roce 2026 právě na úkor Ukrajiny, kterou ruská vojska už déle než tři roky vojensky pustoší.
