Arne Slot ‘disappointed’ by Alexander-Arnold’s departure, confirms Bradley to start vs Arsenal

Arne Slot believes Liverpool will continue to flourish after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exit as he confirmed that Conor Bradley will start Sunday’s game against Arsenal at Anfield.

The Dutch head coach admits he will miss working with Alexander-Arnold, who earlier this week announced he will leave on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer. Liverpool’s vice-captain is on the brink of signing for Real Madrid, but Slot is backing Bradley to step up and help fill the void.

“Like everybody who likes Liverpool, we’re disappointed about Trent leaving. Not only because a human being is leaving the club but also a very good full-back,” Slot said.

“But I also worked at clubs previously where every season multiple very good players left so I’m a bit more used to it maybe with the experience I have. If a very good player is leaving then the next very good player will step up, and that is probably what is going to happen now.

“Let’s not compare Conor with Trent, they are two different types in my opinion. With Conor we all see the potential but last week I walked on to the pitch (at Stamford Bridge) with him and I was surprised when he said it was also his first time there. I thought he was further in his development than first away game at Chelsea.

“He’s a very talented player but Conor unfortunately hasn’t been fit throughout the whole season. To become a very good player you have to be available every week and that is the first step he has to take next season, but we have a lot of confidence in him. Conor will start on Sunday as he needs playing time to get games under his belt to be better prepared for next season.”

Slot refused to be drawn on whether Liverpool will buy a new right-back this summer to compete with Bradley for playing time as he pointed to the fact that Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones have all played there previously.

“So we still have four players who can play that position,” he added.

“I think it would be a surprise to you if I now said we are looking at this and that.

“We don’t talk about contracts over here, we don’t talk about positions or whether we want to improve the team is certain areas.

“The difficult thing for a club like Liverpool when you’ve just won the league, it’s not easy to find better players than we already have. If they are there then they still need to be affordable and want to come to us. The last one is usually not a problem, but sometimes transfer fees are.”

It remains to be seen what kind of reaction Alexander-Arnold gets at Anfield on Sunday, but Slot hopes the home supporters help the champions get back to winning ways after last Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Chelsea.

“That people have an opinion is not new for anyone, but probably it’s a bit more for him now than he is used to and maybe a bit more negative, but I don’t follow all of this,” Slot said.

“I am not here to tell the fans how they should react. I will see Trent in a bit. I will wait and see how he feels about him announcing he will leave the club. I did speak to him on WhatsApp.

“We are all disappointed but Trent is the first one also who said he would prefer us as a team and a club to be not too much distracted by this announcement.

“I am hoping that all the energy on Sunday goes to the players and less as possible to Trent, unless it is positive.”

Real Madrid want to secure Alexander-Arnold’s services before his contract at Liverpool expires on June 30 so he can play for them in the Club World Cup.

However, there has so far been no agreement between the clubs over compensation and Slot wouldn’t comment on whether Liverpool are likely to sanction an early departure.

Slot said: “Do you know where he is going? He hasn’t said anything about it himself. All he has said is that he is going to leave the club.

“For me it is impossible to comment on where he is going or if that is a club that is going to play in the Club World Cup.

“You see in my smile that we both know where he is going to, but it hasn’t been said yet.”
