Shedeur Sanders, once considered a likely Day 1 selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, ended up waiting far longer than expected to hear his name called.
The former Colorado quarterback was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round at No. 144 overall, capping off one of the more surprising draft slides in recent memory.

According to a report from USA TODAY Sports, multiple NFL executives believe a combination of factors led to Sanders‘ drop-but one issue was raised repeatedly: the influence of his father and college coach, Deion Sanders.
“It’s never strictly football,” said one team official familiar with the evaluation process. Another was more direct: “I think his dad’s involvement hurt him.”

Talent questions and off-field approach factored into fall
Though Deion Sanders‘ role as head coach at Colorado gave him a front-row seat to Shedeur‘s development, several team personnel believed his high-profile presence created complications during the scouting process. One executive put it plainly: “I think he had some bad advice from his father.”
Not everyone agreed that Deion was the primary issue. A top NFC executive insisted the evaluation came down to more conventional concerns: “It was talent-based. There were other factors, but you can’t chalk it all up to that.”
Among the red flags raised by teams were Sanders‘ on-field tendencies. He took 94 sacks over his final two college seasons, with many scouts citing a habit of holding the ball too long and struggling with pocket awareness. His arm strength was evaluated as solid but not elite, and there were concerns about how quickly he processed defensive schemes.
His approach off the field also drew criticism from some within the league. Sanders‘ decision to skip the NFL Combine and limit his pre-draft interviews raised questions about his commitment to the process. Reports suggested he declined to meet with teams picking outside the top five, allegedly stating, “You’ve already got a quarterback.”
In addition, some executives were uneasy about his focus on personal branding-highlighted by his signature jewelry, social media presence, and reluctance to engage with teams in traditional ways. One scout summarized the concern: “It’s not about being a brand. It’s about being a teammate and earning a job.”
Despite the concerns, not all feedback was negative. An AFC team executive told USA TODAY that Sanders was ranked as their second-best quarterback in the draft behind Cam Ward. However, they admitted they hadn’t scouted him heavily, expecting another team to take him early.
Sanders now enters a competitive quarterback room in Cleveland, aiming to prove doubters wrong. While his fifth-round status came as a surprise, it may also provide the fresh start he needs.
As one executive concluded, “The best thing to happen might be to get away from his father and be on his own.”
Shedeur Sanders is expected to report to rookie minicamp this week as he begins his NFL journey with plenty to prove-and even more eyes watching.
