Andre Pallante threw 7 1/3 strong innings, Lars Nootbaar drove in a pair of runs, and the visiting St. Louis Cardinals survived a shaky save from Ryan Helsley to beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Pallante (3-2) allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out seven and walking none for the Cardinals, who won their seventh consecutive game. St. Louis scored all of its runs in the second inning off Washington starter Trevor Williams.

Helsley retired the first two batters in the ninth but surrendered a single to Jose Tena and walking the next two batters. He secured his seventh save by getting CJ Abrams to fly out.

Williams (2-4) allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings — his longest start of the season. He struck out four and walked one.

The Nationals’ runs came in the eighth on Dylan Crews’ two-run homer, one of only two extra-base hits they had. They matched the Cardinals with seven hits overall but lost their fourth straight game.

After a scoreless first, Williams plunked Willson Contreras with a pitch and walked Alec Burleson with one out. Pedro Pages’ two-out single put St. Louis on the board. Victor Scott II then slashed an RBI single and Nootbaar drove in two with his ninth double of the season, giving the Cardinals a 4-0 lead.

Washington threatened in the fifth with Keibert Ruiz’s leadoff single and Jacob Young’s bunt hit with two outs, but Pallante escaped further danger by striking out Crews.

Cole Henry threw a perfect seventh in his 1 1/3 innings in relief of Williams, and Zach Brzykcy got the last two outs of the eighth.

ena laced a single off Pallante to begin the bottom of the eighth, and with one out, Crews hit his fifth homer of the season, which halved the Nationals’ deficit and chased Pallante.

JoJo Romero relieved Pallante and immediately allowed Abrams’ double, but Romero retired Alex Call, walked James Wood and escaped trouble by getting Nathaniel Lowe to ground out.

No sweat: Kyle Larson dominates Kansas as he pivots to Indy 500 ride

Bob Pockrass FOX Motorsports Insider <!--> KANSAS CITY, Kan. — It would be easy to declare Kyle Larson as one of racing’s greatest talents and that is why he will roll into Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the NASCAR Cup Series points leader looking to compete in the Indianapolis 500 (Sunday, May 25, noon ET on FOX).He’ll even race a sprint car Monday night in Kokomo, Ind., before going 230 miles an hour Tuesday in preparation for the sport’s biggest race. But it’s not just talent that has allowed Larson to achieve such heights. In the last 18 days, Larson has wrecked his Indy 500 car, won sprint-car races, nearly had another sprint car land in his lap, won an Xfinity Series race, and finished second and fourth in Cup races before dominating the Cup field Sunday at Kansas Speedway for his third […]

2025 PGA Championship odds, picks: Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler predictions from top Masters-winning model

Imagn Images Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina will host the 2025 PGA Championship. It annually hosts the Wells Fargo Championship, now known as the Truist Open, so looking at past winners of that event could result in optimal 2025 PGA Championship bets. Max Homa, Wyndham Clark and Jason Day have won the Wells Fargo in recent years, but no one comes close to the success at the tournament quite like Masters winner Rory McIlroy. The newest Grand Slam champion has four victories at Quail Hollow, including last year. He also has the most wins (three) of any golfer on the PGA Tour this year, so he could be one of the popular 2025 PGA Championship picks and is +500 in the 2025 PGA Championship odds. Dodger Details: Tony Gonsolin’s new gear, Roki Sasaki’s fastball and more

PHOENIX — Tony Gonsolin has learned he has something in reserve. The Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander’s 84th and final pitch was the second-hardest one he would throw on Sunday, a 95.7 mph fastball. The only one faster (95.9) came an inning earlier in the fourth against the Arizona Diamondbacks, when he tried to blow strike three past outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. The velocity is back.AdvertisementGonsolin has shown an ability post-surgery to keep something back for big spots. Just look at his last start on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins, when he reared back for 96.8 mph with two strikes against Ronny Simon, and 96 mph a pitch later. It was his hardest pitch since 2020. In the first inning of that start, he reared back for 95 to retire Kyle Stowers. That’s a big jump when Gonsolin needs it. For contrast, […]
