MLB roundup: Jacob Wilson homers twice as A’s pound Dodgers

Rookie Jacob Wilson delivered four hits along with the first multi-home run game of his career in his homecoming, left-hander Jeffrey Springs went seven strong innings and the visiting Athletics earned an 11-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.

Wilson, a native of nearby Thousand Oaks, Calif., hit the fourth and fifth home runs of his career while finishing with his 16th multi-hit game this season. Nick Kurtz, Miguel Andujar and JJ Bleday also hit home runs for the Athletics.

Springs (5-3) gave up one run on six hits as the A’s continued their success on the road while improving to 14-7 as the visitor. They are 8-13 at home during their first season of temporary relocation in West Sacramento, Calif.

Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts combined to go 0-for-6 at the top of the Dodgers’ order. Landon Knack (2-1) was roughed up for five runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Guardians 2, Brewers 0

Logan Allen and three relievers combined for a three-hitter as Cleveland shut out visiting Milwaukee for the second night in a row.

Allen (2-2), who retired 13 straight Brewers at one point, posted six strikeouts over six innings while allowing three hits. Jose Ramirez cracked a solo homer in the first and scored on a Kyle Manzardo triple in the eighth.

Brewers starter Quinn Priester (1-2) allowed one run over five innings. Leadoff man Jackson Chourio produced a single, double and two stolen bases while Brice Turang contributed Milwaukee’s other hit.

Mets 2, Pirates 1

Brett Baty hit a tie-breaking homer in the seventh to lift host New York to its second win over Pittsburgh in as many nights.

Max Kranick (3-1) threw a perfect seventh in relief of Kodai Senga, who allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings. He added seven strikeouts while seeing his ERA rise to 1.22. Baty posted two hits and Brandon Nimmo provided an RBI double in the first.

Mitch Keller (1-5) struck out a season-high eight over seven innings while giving up two runs and five hits. Alexander Canario and Ke’Bryan Hayes notched two hits apiece while Henry Davis drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth for Pittsburgh’s lone run.

Tigers 10, Red Sox 9 (11 innings)

Javier Baez blasted his second three-run homer of the game in the bottom of the 11th inning to give host Detroit a victory over Boston.

Baez’s game-winner off Greg Weissert came after Jace Jung advanced automatic runner Dillon Dingler with a single. Baez scored three runs and drove in six as the Tigers won for the seventh time in nine games.

Kristian Campbell hit a two-out, two-run homer off Beau Brieske in the top of the inning to give the Red Sox a short-lived 9-7 lead. David Hamilton hit a two-run shot for Boston and Alex Bregman smacked a solo shot.

Cubs 5, Marlins 4

Justin Turner ripped a two-run double to cap a three-run ninth inning that lifted host Chicago past Miami.

The late uprising made a winner out of Chris Flexen (1-0), who allowed one hit over two scoreless innings. Chicago’s Pete Crow-Armstrong launched his team-leading 11th homer of the season in the third inning and added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Connor Norby, Jesus Sanchez and Xavier Edwards each had two hits and Kyle Stowers belted a solo homer for the Marlins, who have lost three in a row and 13 of their last 16 overall

Mariners 2, Yankees 1 (11 innings)

J.P. Crawford singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning as Seattle defeated visiting New York to snap a season-high four-game losing streak.

With Leody Taveras the Mariners’ runner at second base to start the inning, rookie Ben Williamson grounded a single to center field off Tim Hill (3-1) to move Taveras to third. Crawford then hit a soft liner that landed just inside the foul line in left field to win it.

Mariners reliever Casey Legumina (3-1) got the victory. The Yankees tied the game in the ninth on a throwing error by Seattle first baseman Dylan Moore.

Giants 10, Diamondbacks 6

Rookie Christian Koss hit a grand slam, Jung Hoo Lee and Willy Adames also went deep and San Francisco overcame a shaky start by unbeaten Robbie Ray to overtake visiting Arizona.

Ray (6-0) allowed three runs in the top of the first, then no more over the next five innings to join Max Fried of the New York Yankees as the only pitchers to start 6-0.

Brandon Pfaadt (6-3) lasted just four innings, charged with four runs on six hits. Corbin Carroll launched his 14th homer in the seventh inning to pull the Diamondbacks within 7-4.

Padres 6, Angels 4

Fernando Tatis Jr. belted a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as San Diego rallied for a win over visiting Los Angeles.

Elias Diaz started the ninth by drawing a walk from Kenley Jansen (0-2). Tatis jumped on a 2-2 cutter over the heart of the plate and drilled it an estimated 430 feet into the San Diego bullpen for his 11th homer of the year. San Diego won for just the third time in seven games. It was the fourth loss in six games for Los Angeles.

Both starters got a no-decision despite leaving with a late-game lead. Los Angeles’ Jose Soriano worked seven innings, allowing four hits and two runs, both unearned. San Diego’s Dylan Cease gave up five hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings.

Rays 11, Blue Jays 9

Junior Caminero hit a grand slam in a five-run ninth inning and visiting Tampa Bay held on to defeat Toronto.

Daulton Varsho’s second homer of the game, a three-run blast against Edwin Uceta (3-1), with two outs in the eighth had thrust Toronto into a 7-6 lead. Varsho also hit a solo homer in the fourth. Jonathan Aranda hit a two-run homer for the Rays.

Caminero’s first career grand slam came against Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman (3-2). Tampa Bay’s Pete Fairbanks allowed RBI doubles to Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the home ninth.

Rangers 4, Rockies 1

Josh Jung accounted for all the scoring with two home runs to back the solid pitching of Jack Leiter as host Texas defeated hapless Colorado in the middle game of a three-game interleague series.

Leiter (3-2) allowed a run on two hits over six innings as the Rangers won their fourth game in a row and their second straight series after losing the previous six series. Shawn Armstrong worked around a pair of runners in the ninth to earn his first save of the year.

Colorado, meanwhile, dropped its 10th game in its last 11 outings and hasn’t won a series this season. The Rockies are 0-2 under interim manager Warren Schaeffer, who took the reins after Bud Black was fired on Sunday. Kyle Freeland (0-6) went six innings for Colorado, allowing three runs on six hits.

Braves 5, Nationals 2

Spencer Schwellenbach pitched seven strong innings and Atlanta beat visiting Washington to reach the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Schwellenbach (2-3) allowed two runs on four hits. Braves rookie Drake Baldwin went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three runs and two RBIs.

Washington’s C.J. Abrams hit the first pitch of the game for a homer. Reliever Brad Lord (1-5) gave up two runs in two innings after Michael Soroka tossed four innings of two-run ball against his former team.

Astros 2, Royals 1

Isaac Paredes socked a walk-off home run leading off the ninth inning and Houston overcame the visiting Kansas City to knot the three-game series.

Paredes produced his first career walk-off homer against the third pitcher of the game for the Royals, John Schreiber (1-2). The Houston third baseman belted an 0-1 sweeper 375 feet out to left-center field for his fifth home run of the season. Astros reliever Bryan Abreu (1-1) pitched a perfect top of the ninth.

Left-handed starters Kris Bubic and Framber Valdez engaged in a riveting pitchers’ duel. Bubic tied his career high with nine strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. He yielded a run on six hits. Valdez tied his season high by going eight innings. He allowed one run on six hits.

White Sox 5, Reds 1 (10 innings)

Chicago scored four runs in the 10th inning, capped by Miguel Vargas’ three-run homer, to beat host Cincinnati.

Chase Meidroth singled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the 10th inning off Emilio Pagan (0-2) before Vargas’ knockout blow. Steven Wilson (1-0) served up Elly De La Cruz’s game-tying homer in the ninth but wound up with the win.

De La Cruz had two hits for the Reds. Edgar Quero produced three hits and an RBI for the White Sox, and Vargas and Lenyn Sosa collected two hits apiece.
