The Buffalo Bills’ front office, led by general manager Brandon Beane, has made several good moves – the most important being selecting Josh Allen in the first round of the 2018 draft as their new quarterback. Allen has become not only the face of the franchise but also one of the most important players in the NFL.
Josh Allen is one of the best quarterbacks in the league and is currently the NFL MVP. However, the team has come very close to returning to the Super Bowl for the first time in over 20 years – a goal that still eludes the current leader of the Buffalo Bills.

Allen has had several near misses in the playoffs, but even so, the team rewarded him with a $330 million contract, including $250 million guaranteed – making him the highest-paid player in NFL history in terms of guaranteed money. However, that contract is now starting to have consequences.
Today, due to salary cap limitations, the Buffalo Bills do not have the means to sign a top-tier NFL receiver – but perhaps they already have one on the roster and just haven’t recognized his value.
Khalil Shakir Led the Team in Receiving Yards in 2024
Despite not having a true number one receiver, the Buffalo Bills averaged 30.9 points per game – thanks in large part to Josh Allen. The team did not have any receiver go over 1,000 yards, yet they still boasted one of the best offenses in the NFL.

Khalil Shakir had his best year in the NFL with 76 receptions, 821 yards, and 4 touchdowns, which led PFF writer Jonathon Macri to name him the most underrated player on the Bills roster.
“Shakir has been a consistent contributor for the Bills’ receiving corps over the past two seasons, and he stepped up significantly in 2024 in the absence of Stefon Diggs, leading the team in targets (115), receiving yards (995), PFF receiving grade (80.1), and yards per route run (2.20). Shakir ranked in the top 25 for the position in all of those categories.”
“He’s also been one of the most effective receivers with the ball in his hands, averaging 7.7 yards after the catch per reception since 2023 – tied for the sixth-best mark among wide receivers.”
Shakir, a fifth-round draft pick, earned a four-year contract extension this offseason with the Bills, and he is now expected to become Josh Allen’s main aerial weapon in 2025 – a season in which the team will once again be Super Bowl contenders.
