Right after an official WNBA welcome for Paige Bueckers in Dallas, the women’s basketball world extends another hand to a new team. The first-ever Golden State Valkyries game will also mark superstar point guard Kelsey Plum’s debut for the Los Angeles Sparks. Can an expansion team hold its own out of the gate? Is LA ready to turn a corner? We’ll find out together, up in The Bay on Friday night.

How to watch Los Angeles Sparks at Golden State Valkyries

Golden State’s inaugural campaign is cast in sleek violet and black, though expectations will be modest until the franchise develops another draft class or two. The Valkyries faced the Sparks squad in a preseason exhibition earlier this month, yielding a surprisingly close one-point finish. Laeticia Amihere balled out in that game, finishing with a frantic 20 points in 19 bench minutes. She was the only player on the team to crack double-digit scoring.

LA tumbled through a disastrous 2024. It went 8-32, the worst mark in franchise history, but still missed out on the Bueckers sweepstakes. Cameron Brink tore her ACL and won’t be available until at least June. The vibes were decidedly off around one of the sport’s glamour franchises.

Enter Kelsey Plum, stage left. The Sparks dealt the No. 2 pick in this latest draft to reset with a three-time All-Star and two-time champ. Plum’s efficiency dipped a bit last season, but she’s still one of the game’s best distributors and a supremely fearless shot creator. She and fellow All-Star Dearica Hamby should form a flexible pick-and-roll duo. And Los Angeles will seek a sophomore surge from Rickea Jackson. She averaged 10 points in her first two months, then bumped it up to 16 per game in her last two.

Best player to wear both jerseys: Stephanie Talbot is the first and only one to do it. Golden State selected her from last year’s LA roster via the expansion draft.

Sabreena Merchant’s power rankings:

Los Angeles (No. 9) — “When Plum was introduced in Los Angeles after being traded from Las Vegas, she said she had ‘a lot more in the tank’ as a playmaker and planned to be top-five in the league in assists while playing more point guard. Coach Lynne Roberts’ system is fast paced, and if Plum and the Sparks play with tempo — she’s one of the best-conditioned players in the W — there will be opportunities for assists, especially in early offense.”

Golden State (No. 11) — “Maybe this is a bit too reductive, but expansion teams historically struggle quite a bit. The last two teams to enter the league each won fewer than 15 percent of their games in Year 1, and Golden State has the lowest over-under (8.5 on BetMGM) of all 13 teams. I have more hope for Valkyries than some teams thanks to high-quality veterans such as Tiffany Hayes and Kayla Thornton, and young players like Laeticia Amihere looking to prove themselves in a new environment. This franchise has been explicit about its desire to be immediately competitive. The best way to measure that is in the win-loss column.”

NEW YORK — When Jaylen Brown fouled out late in the third quarter Friday night, the Madison Square Garden crowd sent him off with waves goodbye.By then, the Celtics’ season was essentially over. Less than two weeks after they began the second round as overwhelming favorites, they were mashed by the Knicks 119-81 in a Game 6 debacle that Derrick White said “went left pretty quick.”AdvertisementWithout Jayson Tatum, who ruptured his Achilles tendon in Game 4, the Celtics trailed 64-37 at halftime and fell further behind after that. He was crushed to lose the chance to earn a second consecutive championship but didn’t feel any differently about his team.“It was an honor to share the locker room with […]

‘We’re not done:’ After blitzing Boston in Game 6, it’s time to ask — why not the Knicks?

NEW YORK — Head coach Tom Thibodeau made his expectations clear back in September. Yes, the Knicks had just won 50 games, finished with the second seed in the East and made it to the second round of the playoffs. But that was last year. This year’s Knicks would need to integrate new pieces — would need to develop new habits, forge new bonds. You don’t just respawn at the same point you ended at last year; if you want to get to the promised land, you can’t skip any steps.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“It's a long grind, and you prepare for that, and I would think that you begin with the end in mind,” Thibodeau said at Knicks media day. “What’s it going to take at the end for us?”It’s tempting to say that it’s going to take exactly what they got on Friday […]

What did Paige Bueckers reveal in her WNBA rookie debut?

DALLAS — Napheesa Collier texted Paige Bueckers Friday morning. From one UConn champion to another, Collier wished the rookie well. “Good luck tonight!” Collier wrote. “Don’t do too much against us, wait till your next game.”Waiting isn’t in Bueckers’ DNA. As someone who has suffered through major injuries and been forced to sit out a full season of her college career, she never takes a single game for granted. And the ultimate respect she could give a fellow Huskies alumna was competing her hardest and trying to bring the best out of Collier.AdvertisementCollier, in her seventh season, brought her A-game. Bueckers, in her first WNBA contest, still has room to grow to reach that level, finishing with 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting. But the rookie was happy to finally get an important milestone out of the way in Dallas’ 99-84 […]

Phillies pay tribute to ‘POOP’ scoreboard before a wild win over Pirates

<!--> The beginning of Major League Baseball's Rivalry Weekend series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates was also an ending of sorts. Before the season, NBC Sports Philadelphia announced it was changing the Phillies' logo on its scorebug from the letter "P" to "PHI."Normally, that would not be a story worthy of headlines. But by doing so, the broadcast deprived fans of a simple pleasure in life: seeing a "P00P" scoreboard whenever the Phillies faced off against the Pirates. On Friday night, the network decided to pay tribute to that "gone but never forgotten" scorebug. "It was more than just a scoreboard. It was a legend," Phillies announcer Tom McCarthy solemnly read. "An unforgettable icon. Its name, once met with chuckles, quickly became synonymous with good times and fierce rivalries. As the final out arrives on its bright and brilliant run, […]
