Bill Belichick and Tom Brady formed one of the most successful coach-player duos in sports history, winning six Super Bowls together and earning numerous individual accolades. Now, the legendary coach sees something familiar in another quarterback: Patrick Mahomes.
In a recent chat with Ryan Clark on The Pivot Podcast, the former New England Patriots coach outlined three traits that set Brady apart as the Greatest of All Time (GOAT). The first? Avoiding costly mistakes: “No pre-snap penalties, no sacks, no strip sacks, no interceptions.”
The second trait is execution. “Tom, we can’t gain any yards until you get rid of the ball,” Belichick once told Brady. The Hall of Fame quarterback took that instruction to the next level-not only improving himself but maximizing the talent around him.
Finally, composure in critical moments. Belichick praised Brady’s “tremendous ability to see the field, understand situational football, and make quick decisions under pressure.” He believes Mahomes possesses those same qualities.
Mahomes has the same mentality as Brady
In his debut book, The Art of Winning, the eight-time Super Bowl-winning coach avoids making direct comparisons between Brady and Mahomes. Instead, he focuses on the relentless mindset they share-one that separates them from the rest of the league.
“Brady and Patrick Mahomes are both really good,” Belichick writes. He recalls an episode after a narrow Chiefs victory in which Mahomes, instead of celebrating, analyzed what his team could have done better. “This kind of comment is music to my ears. Can’t get enough of it,” Belichick noted.
The anecdote reminded him of Brady’s legendary competitiveness. After a 28-10 Patriots win, TB12 didn’t bask in the victory-he complained: “We should have scored 45!” That, Belichick explains, is “elite leadership.”
Brady still backs Belichick
Just as Belichick dedicates pages of his book to Brady, the former Patriots quarterback returned the favor with a glowing endorsement: “Coach Belichick brought out the best in me. His book will do the same for you.”
Despite longstanding rumors of a fractured relationship when Brady left the Patriots in 2019, the truth is that coach and quarterback have continued supporting each other from afar. That bond is what propelled them to the pinnacle of the NFL.
