Browns to give Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel a fair shot at snatching label of front-runner from Kenny Pickett

The Cleveland Browns are entering the 2025 NFL season with a quarterback situation that’s as crowded as it is uncertain.

With Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders all on the roster, the team is heading into the offseason with what may be the league’s most wide-open quarterback competition.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Browns coaching staff is committed to making the four-way battle as “fair and efficient” as possible.

That won’t be an easy task, considering the limitations of reps during organized team activities (OTAs), mandatory minicamp, and training camp. But the team has a plan: split the offense into two working units and rotate the quarterbacks accordingly.

Is Shedeur Sanders the answer for the Cleveland Browns at QuarterBack?

With 12 wide receivers and five tight ends currently on their 90-man offseason roster, the Browns believe they have enough pass catchers to ensure that all four quarterbacks will get meaningful reps.

In practices, the Browns are expected to group one veteran and one rookie together-for instance, Joe Flacco might be paired with Shedeur Sanders, while Kenny Pickett could rotate with Dillon Gabriel.

This ensures that both the older, experienced quarterbacks and the younger, developmental players work alongside similar levels of competition.

Finding a Week 1 starter while keeping long-term goals in mind

The Browns‘ biggest priority, of course, is identifying which of these four quarterbacks can be the Week One starter-a task made even more challenging given the lack of certainty at the position following Deshaun Watson‘s repeated injuries and inconsistencies.

While Flacco showed flashes of brilliance last season and led Cleveland to the playoffs in a fill-in role, his age is a long-term concern. Pickett, on the other hand, arrived via trade after failing to stick as a starter in Pittsburgh.

Then there are the rookies. Dillon Gabriel, who went undefeated in the regular season with Oregon and was selected in the third round, has impressed with accuracy and decision-making.

Shedeur Sanders, picked in the fifth round and the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, enters the league with significant fanfare and media attention but must prove himself in an NFL system.
