The Dallas Cowboys have a promising rookie in Jaydon Blue, and his early presence has already sparked excitement, plus a surprising bit of controversy.
After being selected in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the former Texas Longhorns standout has become one of the most talked-about additions to the Cowboys’ roster.

But as fans got their first glimpse of Blue in a full Cowboys uniform at the NFL Rookie Premiere, many couldn’t help but fixate on his jersey number rather than his performance.
Blue suited up in No. 34, a number that carries a strong legacy in the NFL. On the surface, it’s a classic running back number – Walter Payton, Earl Campbell, and Bo Jackson all wore it with pride.
Yet, Blue’s supporters were quick to point out that something seemed off. Many had hoped to see him wear No.23, the same number he wore during his time at the University of Texas, where he built his identity as a dynamic offensive weapon.
Should Blue make a jersey change?
The issue, it turns out, isn’t Blue’s preference, it’s availability. No.23 currently belongs to Buddy Johnson, a linebacker who has been with the Cowboys since 2022.
While Johnson played mostly on special teams last season, logging only five defensive snaps, he was active for 14 games and was a consistent presence, playing on over 80% of the Cowboys’ special teams snaps.
That hasn’t stopped fans from speculating. Some believe Johnson might be persuaded to give up the number if Blue makes a big enough impact in training camp or if a behind-the-scenes deal can be made.
Johnson has worn a variety of numbers throughout his career, including 45, 51, and 57, so a switch wouldn’t be unusual for him.
“Most football fans would agree that the No.23 should not be worn by a linebacker,” noted one fan on social media, echoing a sentiment shared by others who want to see Blue maintain his college identity.
Others, however, are embracing the tradition of No.34. As a number worn by some of the greatest backs in NFL history, it carries weight.
Blue may be the next in line to make it iconic for a new generation of Cowboys fans. And let’s not forget – Tony Dorsett, one of the greatest running backs in franchise history, wore No.33. Not far off.
As Blue begins his journey in Dallas, all eyes will be on how he adapts-not just in terms of his jersey, but how he contributes in an offense that needs answers at the running back position.
With Tony Pollard now in Tennessee, Blue enters a wide-open depth chart that gives him a legitimate shot at early touches.
A chance to shine in Dallas
At Texas, Blue was known for his breakaway speed, vision, and ability to make defenders miss. If he can bring even a fraction of that to Dallas, his number will soon become secondary to his production.
The Cowboys have long leaned on explosive running backs to fuel their offense, and Blue has a chance to carry on that tradition, regardless of whether he does it in 34 or 23.
One thing is certain: Jaydon Blue is already making headlines, and the conversation is only just beginning. The number on his back may be temporary, but his potential to leave a lasting mark in Dallas is very real.
