Why Pacers’ Aaron Nesmith and his ‘toe tap’ top conference finals X-factors

INDIANAPOLIS — A funny scene plays out over and over in Indiana Pacers games, especially during these playoffs. Act I is fairly mundane: Aaron Nesmith getting an open catch-and-shoot 3-pointer and knocking the shot down.Act II, shortly thereafter, is Pacers reserve T.J. McConnell getting up from the bench and stamping his right foot repeatedly into the ground, as if he’s either putting out a flaming ember or improvising a jig. Those two acts collide for viewers when Nesmith ends up making a corner 3 in front of the Pacers’ bench:It all gets back to something called a “leave it,” a shooting cue assistant coach Lloyd Pierce developed with Nesmith, and McConnell has enthusiastically joined in on the fun.Nesmith has a habit of tapping his right foot when he gets an open shot.“Something I do subconsciously, when I catch the ball if […]

NFL’s next big move? Proposing three bold rule changes after vote to join 2028 Olympics flag football

Getty Images The NFL officially charted new waters this week, voting on Tuesday to approve player participation in the 2028 Olympics, which will feature flag football as an international competition for the first time. There are clear restrictions on the venture, including Olympic teams rostering a maximum of one player per NFL team, but it's still a major step, clearing the way for the league's talent to reach a worldwide stage.By the time the Summer Games kick off in Los Angeles in 2028, it's anyone's guess as to which NFL players will be best suited to represent Team USA -- or another country -- on the flag football field. We have some early ideas of our own, proposing a 12-man roster headlined by the Washington Commanders' Jayden Daniels, but it's important to remember that flag football is an entirely different […]

Detroit Lions withdraw proposal to change seeding format for NFL playoffs amid lacking league-wide support

Getty Images The Detroit Lions' proposal to change the seeding format for the NFL playoffs was never put to a vote after the Lions withdrew the proposal on Wednesday morning, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones confirmed, adding that the proposal "was never going to pass" this time around. Detroit clearly didn't feel that it had enough support to move ahead with the vote. Any proposal needs the support of at least 24 of the NFL's 32 owners in order to pass. While it clearly didn't have support from owners, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is reportedly in favor of changing the league's playoff format in an effort to make late-season games more exciting. In fact, the Lions' proposal was reportedly made at the behest of the league office. The Lions' proposal would have seeded each conference's seven playoff teams based on record and not […]

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Former Top prospect Robert Hassell set for debut amid Nationals’ injuries

Jayne Kamin-Oncea / USA TODAY Sports We've got a bunch of interesting pitcher targets to consider for the waiver wire from Tuesday's games, but before we get to that, let's talk about a former top-prospect outfielder getting the call. With Dylan Crews nursing a back/side injury that will at least require an MRI (and could end with him on the IL), the Nationals are promoting former first-rounder Robert Hasell to make his MLB debut Wednesday. Hasell had been a top-100 prospect from 2021 through 2023 but has mostly struggled since getting to the high-minors, hitting just .238/.328/.334 at Double-A, and even worse overall at Triple-A. So, is there anything worth getting excited about here? Probably not, but I'm not writing him off entirely. Hasell performed well in the Arizona Fall League at the end of last season and then generated a bit of buzz as a […]

Growing up, “Cheers” was a big part of my television consumption. Norm was a perfect complementary character, and Wendt embodied him in a way nobody else could. I could watch a supercut of his entrances on that show forever.Thunder StormCan Minnesota weather OKC’s storm? All season long, the third quarter was a torture chamber for the Thunder’s opponents. It’s not like the first half of those games went well. They would usually be up double digits, sending teams into halftime hoping to make adjustments. They probably said things like, “Let’s go win the first four minutes of the third quarter, get back in this game and put the pressure back on […]
