Oilers at Stars Game 1 picks, odds, schedule: Dallas favored for game, Edmonton for series

We’re getting a rematch in this year’s Western Conference Final.

The Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars will renew hostilities after a thrilling Game 6 last spring, culminating in an Oilers series victory and a Connor McDavid highlight-reel goal for the ages. We know how the Oilers’ season turned out after that. But Dallas is back with a loaded squad, including playoff MVP candidate and leading scorer Mikko Rantanen.

The early odds favor the Stars to win Game 1, but Edmonton is favored to win the entire series and repeat as Western Conference champion. The margins between these Cup hopefuls should be quite thin.

Oilers at Stars Game 1

Series odds: Oilers -120, Stars +100

Can we take a moment to praise defenseman Miro Heiskanen? The fact that the Stars found a way to win playoff games is impressive and a testament to their deep lineup. Thomas Harley, for example, has had an incredible year with increased minutes and responsibility and even clinched the Stars ‘ second-round series against the Winnipeg Jets with an overtime winner. But there’s a reason why Heiskanen is their No. 1 rearguard, and you can look no further than his effectiveness for Dallas in their series-clinching victory over Winnipeg. He’s brilliant in all situations as he can help offensively and limit chances defensively.

Dallas has more than enough weapons up front in Rantanen, Wyatt Johnston, Roope Hintz and Mikael Granlund, among others. But the focus should be on Dallas’ defense against Edmonton’s firepower up front.

That firepower isn’t limited to McDavid, of course. But he’s leading the charge in points. Sixteen of his 17 points this postseason have come at even strength, the most of any player this spring. Leon Draisaitl is in the top five in playoff scoring this spring and halfway to his 32-point output during his electric 2021-22 playoffs, while tied for the team lead in goals scored (five) with 40-year-old Corey Perry.

McDavid, Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard are each averaging above a point per game in the playoffs. (I’m excluding Jeff Skinner, who has one point in his lone playoff game this spring.) All but three Oilers have recorded points in the playoffs this year. The Oilers boast depth up and down their lineup, too, and they’ve been producing.
