Finský tenista bojoval s nezvladatelnými záchvaty úzkosti, uvažoval nad koncem kariéry

První panickou ataku prožil před třemi lety v Miami. „Jedno ráno jsem se na Floridě vzbudil a měl jsem pocit, jako by mě někdo škrtil. Bylo to, jako by mi někdo šlapal na hrudník. Sedli jsme do auta, abychom jeli na kurty, a nemohl jsem mluvit. Hlavou se mi honily miliony myšlenek. Než jsme dojeli, třásl jsem se. V tu chvíli jsem jen ztěžka dokázal zadržet slzy dostatečně dlouho na to, abych trenérovi řekl, že nejsem v pořádku. Cítil jsem se otřesně a netušil jsem, co se děje,“ uvedl Ruusuvuori.

Dokázal se trochu uklidnit a vyhrál zápas s Američanem Maximem Cressym. O pár dní později prohrál až 8:10 v rozhodujícím tie-breaku s Italem Jannikem Sinnerem. Svůj vnitřní boj před okolím skrýval. V březnu 2023 se dostal na životní 37. místo světového žebříčku.

Loni se ale jeho psychické potíže zhoršovaly. Už na Roland Garros cítil, že to zachází příliš daleko. „Nemohl jsem pořádně spát, začal jsme mít noční můry. Probouzel jsem se zpocený s bušícím srdcem a nemohl jsem dýchat. Myslel jsem si, že zešílím,“ svěřil se rodák z Helsinek. V tomto stavu vypadl na antukovém grandslamu hned v prvním kole.

Přesunul se na trávu, ale na challengeru v Surbitonu měl panickou ataku přímo na kurtu. „Řekl bych vám, jaký to je pocit, ale vůbec si ten zápas nepamatuji,“ poznamenal. Záchvaty paniky byly čím dál častější, přepadaly ho i při řízení. „Během Wimbledonu jsem musel sjet ze silnice, zastavit a vystoupit z auta, protože jsme měl chvílemi pocit, že omdlím. Neměl jsem to vůbec pod kontrolou,“ líčil šestadvacetiletý Fin.

Vzpomínal, jak měl na kdysi vysněném turnaji najednou pocit, že chce být někde jinde nebo někým jiným. Vyměnil realizační tým a odjel ještě na turnaj do Washingtonu, ale tam přišla poslední kapka. „Když jsem šel spát, začal jsem mít pocit, že je v místnosti ještě někdo jiný. Byl to určitý druh strachu, pocit, že se mi někdo pokusí ublížit,“ řekl.

Z následujícího turnaje v Montrealu se kvůli údajné střevní chřipce odhlásil a rozhodl se, že tenisovou raketu prozatím odloží. „Čtyři a půl měsíce jsem se jí potom nedotkl a některé z těch dní byly ty nejhorší,“ vzpomínal. „Nedokázal jsem se už z ničeho radovat. Nehrál jsem zápasy a bojoval s tím, abych vůbec vstal z postele. Upřímně, měl jsem dokonce myšlenky, jestli vůbec chci žít, což bylo děsivé. Ještě horší bylo, jak to ovlivnilo mé nejbližší, jaký strach o mě měli.“

Byl smířený s tím, že se k profesionálnímu tenisu možná nevrátí. Rozptýlení mu poskytoval jiný raketový sport padel. Pomohlo mu, když se svěřil nejbližší rodině a přátelům. „Jeden z mých blízkých kamarádů prošel něčím podobným. Díky tomu jsme zjistil, že v tom nejsem sám. Dalo mi to nadhled,“ popsal Ruusuvuori jeden z momentů, kdy se jeho stav začal zlepšovat.

Vrátil se do tréninku a v únoru znovu nastoupil do turnaje. „První zápas byl otřesný. Být na kurtu bylo tak těžké. Druhý byl trochu lepší, ale pořád je to od té doby nahoru – dolů,“ řekl. V Koreji pak prožil jeden ze svých nejhorších záchvatů. Na rozdíl od minulosti ale zná více způsobů, jak si v takových chvílích pomoci.

Svůj příběh před několika týdny zveřejnil prostřednictvím videa ve finštině a ohlasy ho potěšily. Nyní může mít dosah ještě větší. „Kdyby můj příběh pomohl byť jen jedinému člověku, tak to stojí za to,“ dodal.
