UFC 315 marked a turning point in the welterweight division. In the main event of this card, Jack Della Maddalena (18-2) dethroned Belal Muhammad (24-4) as the 170-pound champion, prompting Islam Makhachev (27-1) to move up in weight to seek the double belt. Ian Garry (16-1), the replacement fighter for the fight between the Palestinian and the Australian, has been one of the most affected contenders by the Dagestani’s initiative, as he will now have to wait to get his title shot.
Makhachev is a friend of Muhammad’s, which is why he has not moved up until now, but the Palestinian’s defeat has given the UFC’s pound-for-pound number one the green light. “All of us welterweights have to take a step back and give Islam the respect he deserves,” Garry said in a video posted on his social media. ‘The Future’ is one of the most respected fighters in the division after his recent performances, but he recognises that the current lightweight champion deserves to be given preference over him.

However, just as happened in the fight between Belal and Della Maddalena, the Irishman has made it clear that he is available for the title fight in case there is any setback. “If negotiations don’t go so well, you’ve got a tall, blond Irishman who’s ready to take over the UFC. I’ll beat Jack Della Maddalena,” he concluded. Garry is always ready to step into the octagon, as he already proved by taking his last two fights against Shavkat Rakhmonov and Carlos Prates on short notice

Right now, the Irish fighter is one of the names of the moment in the 170-pound division and, despite being ranked number six in the division, even Sean Brady – number one – wants a fight against him. “I want to fight again before the end of the summer, let us fight. Whoever wins will be the true contender for the belt,” said the Philadelphia fighter in front of the UFC microphones.

That the main candidate to get the next shot at the belt wants a fight with Garry is a clear sign that the Irishman’s status is much higher than his ranking position suggests. Considering that Makhachev and Della Maddalena will fight after the summer, there will not be another welterweight title fight until 2026, so the rest of the contenders will have to fight each other in what is possibly the best division in the UFC right now.
