The rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese could jeopardize the WNBA: “It’s embarrassing”

The 2025 WNBA season tipped off with enormous anticipation, largely driven by the brewing rivalry between Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever and Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky.

Often likened to the league’s version of Magic Johnson vs. Larry Bird, the Clark-Reese dynamic has captivated fans and media alike. But what was supposed to be a high-level basketball showdown has instead turned into a flashpoint of controversy.

Caitlin Clark commits a huge foul over Angel Reese in order to defend her teammate

The drama began during the Fever‘s recent matchup against the Sky. With Reese on a clear path to the basket, Clark lunged in, drawing a foul that was later upgraded to a flagrant 1 upon video review.

In the ensuing confrontation, both Reese and Aliyah Boston were issued technical fouls. While physical plays are part of competitive basketball, this incident ignited a media firestorm that quickly overtook the narrative of the game itself.

Game Recap: Thunder 114, Timberwolves 88

Rather than focusing on the record-setting aspects of the game, coverage has zeroed in on the foul and the aftermath. For some, the WNBA’s decision to schedule five matchups between these two teams this season seems more like a ploy for controversy than a celebration of competition.

Analyst voices concern over WNBA’s narrative direction

One of the most outspoken critics has been Rachel A. DeMita, a national sports analyst who covers the league. On her YouTube channel, she didn’t hold back in expressing her frustration.

“I do actually have to think about how I want to move forward with covering this league because it’s so-it’s actually embarrassing; it’s so embarrassing covering this league,” DeMita said. “If this is going to be the whole season, I can’t do it again, you guys. Like, I’m not interested.”

DeMita emphasized that she’s a lifelong basketball fan, and for someone like her to lose enthusiasm speaks volumes about the current state of the conversation surrounding the WNBA.

The focus, she argues, has shifted away from the sport and toward a soap opera-like spectacle.

In 2024, similar discussions surrounding Clark and Reese expanded beyond the court, with some players reportedly frustrated by Clark‘s reluctance to publicly condemn racism.

Now in 2025, even LeBron James became a lightning rod for criticism after congratulating Clark on her triple-double performance, prompting backlash for not acknowledging Reese.

“The WNBA wanted to capitalize on the Angel Reese-Caitlin Clark rivalry by putting these two teams up against one another five times during this season,” DeMita added. “We have four more games of this, and this was game one. A basketball play has escalated into this.”

That Sky-Fever game may have drawn 2.5 million viewers, according to ESPN PR, making it a major success in terms of exposure.

But there is a growing concern that controversy is becoming the league’s main attraction rather than the high-caliber talent on display.

If the WNBA is to solidify its place as a premier professional sports league, it must recenter the spotlight on the athletes’ skills, team dynamics, and the evolution of the game-not the social media skirmishes or external distractions.

Failing to do so may win headlines in the short term, but it could cost the league long-term credibility with serious fans.

Former MLB player suing Reds for unsafe field conditions that led to career-ending injury

Now, two years later, he's suing the Reds. Ruf ran into what the lawsuit says was an unpadded, metal tarp roller on June 2, 2023. It would be the last major-league game of his career. He returned more than three months later in Triple-A to appear in seven games before his professional career ended. Ruf's lawsuit accuses the Reds of negligence in failing to maintain safe field conditions, citing negligent and "reckless" conduct from the grounds crew to leave the tarp in such fashion. "This didn't need to happen," Ruf said in a statement (via AP). "I wish it didn't happen. Players shouldn't have to worry about hidden hazards like that on a major league field." Per Ruf's complaint, he […]

Realigned Phillies bullpen finds its footing in 5 days following José Alvarado suspension

DENVER — Now the longest-tenured man in the Phillies bullpen, Matt Strahm did not have a speech to make. There wasn’t much to utter in the wake of José Alvarado’s 80-game suspension that both weakened the bullpen and elevated it to the unit that will face the highest scrutiny as spring becomes summer.AdvertisementThere is so much baseball left; all anyone can be certain of is that the Phillies’ bullpen mix will likely not be the same come July or October. But this is who they have right now. It has to work.“That’s kind of always been the mindset of this bullpen since I’ve been in it,” Strahm said. “You look back to the ’23 bullpen. I mean, we had seven closers down there. So a lot of the conversation was: Quit worrying about when you’re throwing, or how you’re throwing. […]

Scott Foster gets bloody nose after Lu Dort accidentally hits veteran NBA referee in Thunder-Wolves Game 2

Getty Images Game 1 of the Western Conference finals matchup between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves was plenty physical, as would be expected between two of the NBA's most rugged, talented teams deep into the postseason. And early in Game 2, a referee got caught in the fray, too. Veteran referee Scott Foster got kicked by Julius Randle and hit in the face by Luguentz Dort -- both accidental -- as the two competed for a jump ball. Foster received some medical attention as the game took an unexpected pause just 93 seconds in. He returned without missing any game time, but the game was delayed for a few minutes. Foster, 58, has been an NBA referee since 1994-95 and, in turn, has become one of the sport's most recognized officials. Thursday's game in Oklahoma City marked his 261st […]
