Die Euroleague geht neue Wege!

Ab Freitag findet das „Final 4“ des wichtigsten europäischen Basketball-Klubwettbewerbs erstmals außerhalb Europas statt. In der Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi geht es vor 18.000 Zuschauern um die Europa-Krone.

Botschafter der Veranstaltung ist die Legende Toni Kukoc (56), der dreimal an der Seite von Michael Jordan die NBA-Meisterschaft mit den Chicago Bulls gewann. Auch in der Euroleague, bzw. dem Vorgänger-Wettbewerb Europapokal der Landesmeister, holte er dreimal den Titel (1989, 1990 und 1991). Dabei wurde er dreimal zum „wertvollsten Spieler“ des Europapokals gewählt.

Für das „Final 4“ ist er in Abu Dhabi und lobt den Mut, neue Wege zu gehen: „Das ist großartig für den Sport, der die Menschen zusammenbringt. Jeder liebt Sport. Daher ist auch toll, dass die Athleten und ihre Sportevents in neue Teile der Welt gehen. So können mehr Fans aus erster Hand den Sport erleben, nicht nur vor dem Fernseher.“

[–>Daher ist er davon überzeugt, dass das Euroleague-Turnier in Abu Dhabi ein Erfolg werde. „Fans von jeder der vier Mannschaften werden vor Ort sein“, sagt Kukoc. „Die Halle wird voll sein.“ Der Markt in Nahost sei sehr interessant: „Einige andere Sportarten wie Fußball und Formel 1 sind bereits hierhergekommen und haben Erfolg“, sagt die NBA-Legende. „Hier wird Geld investiert, um das Beste aus den Athleten herauszuholen. Sie bekommen hier Aufmerksamkeit, was sehr schön ist.“

Der Basketball werde immer offener und spannender: „Früher wusste man vorher schon ziemlich genau, wer in das Finale kommen würde“, sagt Kukoc. „Es waren oft Mannschaften aus dem früheren Jugoslawien und Russland. Jetzt wird der Sport immer globaler. Wenn man vier, fünf, sechs Spieler zusammen hat, kann man erfolgreich sein.“ Das zeigte bereits die deutsche Nationalmannschaft mit dem WM-Titel 2023.

Bei der Euroleague gibt es auch eine deutsche Beteiligung: Für Panathinaikos ist Center Tibor Pleiß (35) dabei, bei Monaco Weltmeister Daniel Theis (33). Alle vier Mannschaften sind extrem nah beieinander. Es gibt keinen klaren Favoriten.

Im Halbfinale treffen am Freitag Fenerbahçe Istanbul und Panathinaikos Athen (17 Uhr, deutsche Zeit, live bei MagentaSport) sowie Olympiacos Piräus und die AS Monaco (20 Uhr) aufeinander. Das Spiel um Platz drei (16 Uhr) und das Finale (19 Uhr) finden am Sonntag statt.

Kukoc: „Mannschaften wie Panathinaikos, Olympiacos und Fenerbahçe haben bereits viel Erfahrung bei solchen ,Final 4‘-Spielen. Die Erwartungen sind hoch. Monaco ist der Newcomer und soll ziemlich gut sein. Sie sind die Außenseiter, aber das ist keine schlechte Rolle. Ich kenne das von meinem ersten Titel 1989 mit Jugoplastika. Da gab uns gegen Barcelona und Maccabi Tel Aviv auch niemand eine Chance. Wir überraschten aber alle. In einem K.o.-Spiel kann alles passieren, anders als in einer Best-of-Seven-Serie.“

Bei Monaco gebe es nur die Gefahr, dass das Team überwältigt sein könnte: „Wenn du erst einmal im Treibsand steckst, kann es sein, dass du nicht mehr rauskommst. Dann wird es sehr schwer.“
