Dodgers begin grueling stretch with soggy marathon win over Mets despite undermanned pitching staff

NEW YORK — On Friday night, the Dodgers emerged victorious, technically speaking. The defending champions outlasted the Mets 7-5 in an ugly, delirious, rain-soaked, 13-inning slopfest. The game started at 7:10 p.m. ET. It ended just before 1 a.m.There will be bleary-eyed ballplayers on Saturday.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementEven though L.A. won the battle, the night that would not end has created something of a conundrum. Ahead of the Dodgers: a grueling month-long stretch, 26 consecutive games against teams with winning records. To commence that imposing slice of the schedule, this club would have loved a simple, painless opening act. One that might have allowed its overtaxed pitching staff a breather. That’s not what happened.Instead, a combo of rain and extra innings forced Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts to use nearly every arm in his already exhausted bullpen. It was a pyrrhic victory of epic proportions. When […]

Oilers ‘punch back’ with strong Game 2 — and with Stuart Skinner back in shutout form

DALLAS — Once is a coincidence; twice is a pattern. And that pattern is starting to look like a good omen for the Edmonton Oilers and their Stanley Cup chances. For the second time in these playoffs, the Oilers followed up a crushing loss with a convincing win. The latest one was Game 2 on Friday, when they beat the Dallas Stars 3-0 to even the Western Conference final at 1-1, with Game 3 on Sunday in Edmonton.Advertisement“That’s the playoffs. You have to be able to punch back,” Oilers winger Zach Hyman said. “We recognize how important each game is, but especially after a loss. You have to come out strong and earn a split, and we were able to do it.”The Oilers’ response came after they dropped the series opener 6-3 on Wednesday, when they allowed five unanswered goals in […]

Why Knicks went away from Karl-Anthony Towns in Game 2 when ‘searching for a win’

NEW YORK — In a crucial, nearly seven-minute stretch of the fourth quarter, with the New York Knicks trailing the Indiana Pacers and desperately needing to score, Karl-Anthony Towns was on the bench.Just a couple of hours before that, the Knicks’ big man was named to the All-NBA third team, voted on by 100 media members who cover the league, for averaging 24.4 points, grabbing a career-high 12.8 rebounds and shooting a career-best 42.0 percent from 3 during the regular season.AdvertisementThough both true, these two pieces of Towns’ Friday evening don’t match. A player that good just shouldn’t be on the bench for that long near the end of such an important game. And yet, there was Towns, a five-time All-Star (including this season), subbing out with nine minutes left and the Knicks trailing by 9 to the Pacers. He did […]

Carlos Correa impresses in return from concussion, leads Twins to 15th win in 17 games

MINNEAPOLIS — Carlos Correa returned to the Minnesota Twins’ lineup Friday, the first day the All-Star shortstop was eligible to be activated from the concussion injured list after a May 15 collision with Byron Buxton.Correa wasted no time making his presence felt in a 3-1 walk-off win versus the Kansas City Royals — first with his bat, later with his glove and arm on a key double play, and finally with his legs. Tom Thibodeau’s dogmatic commitment to his starting lineup might cost the Knicks a trip to the NBA Finals

Getty Images No lineup in basketball has played more than the starting five for the New York Knicks. The group of Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns played 940 minutes during the regular season, and only two other lineups played even half as many minutes. It's a Tom Thibodeau cliché at this point. No coach in the NBA clings as desperately to his best players as Thibodeau does. He's been a head coach for 12 full seasons and one of his players has led the NBA in minutes per game in four of them. Even when they don't, several are often near the top of their list. His 2018 Timberwolves starters also led all NBA lineups in total minutes. This is perhaps his defining trait as a coach. It's also probably going to cost him his first […]
