How Arsenal crafted their second Women’s Champions League title: ‘Being calm, clear and ruthless’
Arsenal Women are champions of Europe (again).Eighteen years after becoming the first English side to win the Champions League, they are now the first team to go all the way through the qualifying rounds to lift the trophy. In a rollercoaster season that began with high-profile player departures, on-pitch frustrations and managerial changes, Renee Slegers leading Arsenal to the European summit feels nearly impossible. They beat perennial Champions League winners Barcelona 1-0 after despatching record-holders Olympique Lyonnais in the semi-finals.AdvertisementBut, hey, this is the year of the underdog, isn’t it?When Arsenal’s Champions League campaign began in September, with a 6-0 qualification win over Rangers, Slegers was still part of then-head coach Jonas Eidevall’s backroom staff. She was an academy player at Arsenal when they last won the Champions League, and Eidevall brought her back to work as an individual development coach.Slegers’ focus […]

Tyson Fury shoots down talk of return from retirement: ‘I’m retired and I’m staying retired’
Getty Images When multi-time former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury recently shared a video of himself training in the gym with coach SugarHill Steward and said, "You know what's coming," speculation kicked off that Fury would end his retirement, possibly to face Anthony Joshua in a long-awaited U.K. super fight. Fury threw cold water on those hopes with a video posted to Instagram on Saturday."I hear a lot of talk of the Gypsy King returning to boxing. What would I return for? More boxing belts? I've won 22 of them," Fury said. "... But I'm happy, I'm happy, contented with what I have achieved, what I've accomplished. I've been around the world and back again." Fury announced his retirement from boxing in January after suffering his second consecutive defeat against Oleksandr Usyk. While it may have been an appropriate time for […]

Kyle Larson, another Indy 500/NASCAR ‘Double’ try, and a GOAT legacy in reach
INDIANAPOLIS — In the most recent NASCAR Cup Series points race, Kyle Larson led 83 percent of the laps, won his third race of the still-young season and took over the series points lead heading into his Memorial Day Weekend “Double” attempt.Given his frequent success, Larson’s NASCAR rivals would have every reason not to like him. But among his peers, seemingly no one feels that way.AdvertisementAnd after winning 26 Cup Series races since the start of 2021, they would also have every reason to cheer against him. But when the NASCAR drivers watch Larson in Sunday’s Indianapolis 500, awaiting their turn to race against him in Charlotte’s 600-mile race that night, many will be doing the opposite.“Yeah, I root for him,” two-time NASCAR champion Kyle Busch said. “I wish him well in that endeavor. You hope one of your fellow […]

Bonmati’s tears: Brilliant but still beaten by Arsenal
This was Arsenal’s moment but the eye was drawn to the player in a Barcelona shirt whose day this was supposed to be. Aitana Bonmati is the outstanding performer in the women’s game but this time the Champions League trophy had eluded her.She was in tears upon the final whistle, hunched down, head in hands, beaten. Bonmati was consoled by Leah Williamson but many minutes had passed before any of her own team-mates dared approach her. This was a very personal grief in a very public setting.
