Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has signed a contract extension to keep him at St. James’ Park until 2027.
The England international has become a firm fan favourite since joining from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2022.
Fresh terms cap a standout 2024-25 season for the 33-year-old which included a man of the match performance in the Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool in March and also saw him rewarded with a first senior England call up and an international debut against Albania.

“I’m delighted to sign a new deal here,” Burn said after Saturday’s announcement. “I knew that I was going into my last year and I really wanted to get my future tied down. I’ve said before that I would love to finish my career here so to be given that opportunity, I’m very grateful.
“I still feel like I’m getting better and I don’t feel that I’ve hit the top of the hill yet. It’ll be tough to top this season but hopefully we can do that over the next couple of years. It’s a dream come true to be playing for this club and I’m delighted that I get to keep doing it.”
Head coach, Eddie Howe, added: “Dan has had an incredible season. He has been a key part of our most memorable moments and has rightly been rewarded with senior international football.
“He is a leader who epitomises the attitude and commitment we want, and I’m delighted he’ll be staying with us for even longer.”
‘One of the best buys in Newcastle’s modern history’
Pound for pound, Burn has been one of the best buys in Newcastle’s modern history. He has repeatedly risen to every challenge and, as he told The Athletic less than six months after signing, he had full confidence that he would ensure he was more than merely a “stop-gap signing” to help the club avoid relegation.
A fourth-placed finish and then a Champions League campaign followed as a left-back, then since reverting to his natural position of centre-half this season, Burn has been arguably Newcastle’s most-consistent performer. He scored at Wembley against Liverpool in March and wrote his name into club folklore in the process, as part of the first Newcastle side to win a domestic trophy in 70 years.
England honours have deservedly followed and he is one of Eddie Howe’s most trusted lieutenants at St James’ Park. He provides leadership, defensive resilience and is rarely injured.
A centre-half is being targeted this summer, but that is to bolster the contingent Newcastle already have and provide added competition, rather than to displace a mainstay like Burn. That is why a contract extension is a no-brainer.
