Arsenal’s David Raya, Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels win Premier League Golden Glove

Arsenal’s David Raya and Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels have both won the Premier League Golden Glove with 13 clean sheets this season.

The pair were tied on 13 clean sheets going into their final matches of the Premier League season on Sunday, with Forest facing Chelsea in a consequential match for Champions League placing, while Arsenal travelled to already-relegated Southampton.

Sels conceded in the 50th minute as Levi Colwill put Chelsea ahead at the City Ground, provisionally taking Enzo Maresca’s side up to fourth and leaving Forest in seventh. That left Raya with the chance to seal an individual Golden Glove award for the second season in succession, but he conceded on 56 minutes as Ross Stewart cancelled out Kieran Tierney’s first-half opener.

Raya, 29, was the holder of the award after keeping 16 clean sheets last season. He was again a part of the Premier League’s strongest defence this term, conceding just 34 goals in 38 matches.

The Spaniard joined Arsenal permanently ahead of the 2024-25 season, after initially signing on loan with an option to buy from Brentford in August 2023. Ahead of Sunday’s match, Arteta praised Raya for “consistently performing at the highest level,” despite it being a “very unpopular” transfer due to the form of Aaron Ramsdale, who was subsequently dropped as Arsenal’s No 1 and left for Southampton last summer.

Arsenal’s defensive record could not guide them to silverware this term as they finished behind Premier League champions Liverpool — their third straight season as runners-up — and were beaten by Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals of the Champions League. The FA Cup trophy in 2020 remains Arsenal’s last major honour.

Sels, 33, featured in all of Forest’s Premier League matches this season, having joined in February 2024 from Ligue 1 side Strasbourg for €6million (£5.1m; $6.5m). In his first full season with the club, he conceded just 46 times in the league.

Nuno said in January that Sels “solved” Forest’s goalkeeping issues, which had been an “issue” for Forest in recent years. Before Sels’ arrival, United States international Matt Turner had been Forest’s first-choice goalkeeper for the first half of the 2023-24 season.
