The Baltimore Orioles signed utility man Cooper Hummel to a free-agent deal and activated him to the active roster Sunday.

In a corresponding move, infielder Terrin Vavra was designated for assignment.

Hummel, 30, was released from his minor league contract by the New York Yankees on Saturday.

He batted .258 with two RBIs and six runs in 10 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Hummel also spent time with the Houston Astros in spring training before he was designated for assignment right before Opening Day.

In parts of three major league seasons for the Arizona Diamondbacks (2022), Seattle Mariners (2023) and Astros (2024), Hummel is a career .159 hitter with three home runs and 17 RBIs.

Vavra, 28, was batting .245 with five RBIs in 27 games for the Orioles this season and was a .254 hitter with one home run and 17 RBIs in 67 games over the past two seasons with the club.

Baltimore also optioned left-hander Trevor Rogers to Triple-A after he was the 27th man for Saturday’s doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox.

Underdog victories in major finals aren’t usually achieved so convincingly.Arsenal were rank outsiders going into the Champions League final against Barcelona on Saturday, with odds of up to 14/1 for them to win the game in 90 minutes. Player for player, Arsenal might only get a couple of names into the starting XI of Barcelona, the dominant side in this competition in recent years. But collectively, Arsenal were unquestionably superior, recording an unlikely but thoroughly deserved victory.AdvertisementThis Arsenal side is comprised almost solely of highly technical players. Centre-backs Steph Catley and Leah Williamson are a former left-back and a former midfielder respectively. Central midfielders Kim Little and Mariona Caldentey are No 10s at heart. Renee Slegers has eschewed old-school centre-backs and functional holding midfielders, and stuck to her Plan A despite knowing Arsenal would spend long periods without the ball. […]

Kyle Larson’s Indy-Charlotte Double ends with crashes in both Indianapolis 500, Coca-Cola 600

Getty Images CONCORD, N.C. -- NASCAR Cup Series star Kyle Larson's second bid at the Indy-Charlotte Double ended on the hook at both ends, as crashes in both the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 kept him from finishing either race on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend.
