The Philadelphia Eagles are working to trade veteran edge rusher Bryce Huff to the San Francisco 49ers for a mid-round draft pick, league sources confirmed to The Athletic on Friday. ESPN first reported the news.
Huff had an underwhelming one-season stint with the Eagles, who signed him as one of the top free agents of last year. He missed five games after wrist surgery, returned in Week 17, and was benched in Philadelphia’s Super Bowl LIX win. He is entering the second year of his three-year, $51.1 million contract in 2025, but had been noticeably absent from Eagles OTAs, which began on Tuesday.

In San Francisco, Huff will be reunited with defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, his head coach for three seasons with the New York Jets. Huff had a breakout year with Saleh in 2023, recording 29 tackles and 10 sacks. New York signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2020 out of Memphis.
How will Huff fit in San Francisco?
Yes, the 49ers drafted a defensive end, Mykel Williams, with their first pick in April, but many wondered why they didn’t draft another with one of their other 10 selections. That’s how bereft the team was on the edge after saying goodbye to Leonard Floyd in free agency and parting ways with Drake Jackson due to injury.
Huff helps restock the cupboard at the position and gives the San Francisco defense the type of twitched-up pass-rush specialist the 49ers currently don’t have. Williams and Nick Bosa are expected to be three-down players — sturdy defensive ends who play the run and pass equally well. Yetur Gross-Matos is a big-bodied run specialist on base downs who can move inside to defensive tackle on obvious passing downs.
Huff, meanwhile, is known for his quickness and bend, which helped him to a 10-sack season when he played for Saleh in 2023. The 49ers have had that sort of player in the past in the form of Elvis Dumervil, Dee Ford and Samson Ebukam. Prior to this trade, however, the player on the current roster who best fit that description was Sam Okuayinonu. Unmet expectations in Philadelphia
Huff’s absence during the first public session of OTAs signaled a schism was forthcoming. But signs of this impending divorce have been around for months. That such a development is happening before Huff’s second season in Philadelphia underlines how short this arrangement fell of the expectations that were set when the Eagles signed in 2024.

The Eagles, who traded Haason Reddick to the Jets, believed they’d landed an up-and-coming pass rusher who’d blossom into an every-down edge defender. But Huff never secured a full-time role with the Eagles and finished with 2.5 sacks and three tackles for loss in 12 games. After Huff was relegated to a pass-rush role, he underwent wrist surgery in November and missed five games. By the time Huff returned in Week 17, Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt had solidified roles opposite Josh Sweat along the defensive edge. Financial implications
When the Eagles made Huff a healthy scratch for Super Bowl LIX in favor of Brandon Graham, it was clear Huff was entering the 2025 offseason on shaky ground. Still, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman insisted in February that “the story’s yet to be written on Bryce.” Roseman is admittedly stubborn to admit defeat in such matters.
The Eagles guaranteed $34 million within Huff’s contract, which signaled their initial belief in the impact he’d have on the defense. Despite Huff’s underwhelming 2024 season, that financial commitment offered him protection. Even if the Eagles cut Huff after June 1, they’d still have absorbed a $19.8 million dead money hit, according to Over the Cap.
But both parties reached an understanding that Huff wasn’t going to be part of the defense’s plans in 2025. The Eagles worked around Huff’s contract by finding a trade partner willing to take on some of the money. Of the $17 million guaranteed Huff was set to make with the Eagles this season, the 49ers will take on $7.95 million, according to ESPN.
In San Francisco, Huff will reunite with Robert Saleh, who was Huff’s head coach in New York. There, Huff will try to reset his trajectory in a new setting. As for the Eagles and Roseman, they must absorb a $9.05 million hit to the chin for missing on Huff. But Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio fielded the NFL’s top-rated defense in 2024 without Huff in the lineup.

The Eagles must identify edge rushers who’ll backfill the snap shares left behind by Sweat, who signed with the Cardinals, and Brandon Graham, who retired. They acquired options beyond Smith and Hunt in free agency and the draft. They signed veterans Azeez Ojulari and Josh Uche to one-year deals and spent a sixth-round pick on Antwaun Powell-Ryland. Jihaad Campbell, their No. 31 pick, is also a versatile inside linebacker who can supply pass-rush snaps along the edge. — Kubena
