Das gab es in der Formel E noch nie: Beim Saisonstart im brasilianischen São Paulo war Jaguar-Pilot Mitch Evans vom letzten Startplatz aus gestartet – und holte am Ende den Sieg! Ein Grund dafür war auch, dass er den sogenannten Attack-Mode im richtigen Moment einsetzte.
Was ist der Attack Mode? Dieser Angriffsmodus gibt dem Rennwagen während des Rennens 50kW zusätzliche Power. Zweimal kann jeder Fahrer den Modus aktivieren, der mehrere Minuten anhält – bei Rennen mit Pit Boost ein Mal. Doch aufgepasst: Um diesen Modus zu aktivieren, müssen die Fahrer über Aktivierungszonen fahren, die sich abseits der Ideallinie befinden.
In den vergangenen beiden Jahren hatte das Feature jedoch keine große Bedeutung mehr – die Autos der Gen3-Generation konnten die Mehrleistung von 50 kW nicht wirklich auf die Strecke bringen.
[–>Das ändert sich in der 11. Saison jedoch schlagartig. Denn die Formel E hat beim neuen Rennwagen Gen3-Evo ordentlich nachgerüstet: Im Attack-Mode wird ab dieser Saison ein Allradantrieb aktiviert. Die neuen Hankook-Reifen sind außerdem weicher und bieten mehr Grip.
Der Attack Mode ist mit dem Allradantrieb zum Game-Changer geworden. Ist der Unterschied zu groß?
Wehrlein zu SPORT BILD: „In der Vergangenheit war es immer so, dass man den Attack Mode so schnell wie möglich wegbekommen wollte und es nicht wirklich ein Vorteil war. Jetzt sehen wir so ein bisschen das Gegenteil. Auf manchen Strecken macht er einen sehr großen Unterschied. Ich würde noch etwas abwarten, wie es sich entwickelt, auch auf den weiteren Strecken. Aber mein momentanes Gefühl ist, dass der Unterschied zwischen Attack Mode und normalem Modus einen Tick zu groß ist.“

Porsche-Kollege Antonio Felix da Costa belegte Platz 2 in Brasilien und sagt: „Selbst wenn du ein paar Sekunden zurückliegst, kannst du das in drei oder vier Kurven wiedergutmachen. So groß ist der Pace-Vorteil!“
Und weiter: „Ich habe es schon vorhergesehen, dass sich die Renndynamik verändern wird. Aber ich hätte nie gedacht, dass sie sich so sehr verändern würde.“
Der aktuell führende Oliver Rowland (Nissan) und Sieger des zweiten Rennens in Mexiko zeigt sich als Fan des Strategie-Elements: „Die ersten fünf oder sechs Rennen werden wirklich die Art und Weise prägen, wie wir während der Saison fahren“, prognostiziert er. „Aber für mich war der Attack Mode eine riesige Erfrischung. Es ist extrem, aber auch unglaublich spaßig und interessant.“
