And one of baseball’s traditions is when benches clear: when players from both teams’ dugouts and bullpens rush onto the field in response to an escalating on-field altercation to show support for their teammates or to potentially intervene in a fight.
A team celebration turns into a wild brawl
The Spring Hill College baseball team’s midweek rivalry game against Mobile was suspended with a score of 5-5 through 11 innings at Sims-Galle Field – believed to be America’s oldest active collegiate baseball field -.
The Alabama Rams opened scoring in the third inning with a three-run double. The Spring HIll College Badgers responded with a 5-0 scoring run through the fifth inning that was capped off by a two-run double from redshirt senior infielder Seth Williams.
Mobile tied the game at 5-5 in the eighth with a pair of runs. The game remained tied through nine innings. The game was suspended after the end of the 11th inning after chaos ensued following the Rams‘ celebration after tying the game. A decision regarding the game being resumed is to be determined.
Spring Hill announces disciplinary actions for his players
The all out brawl lasted several seconds before coaches and officials were able to separate the players involved. During the massive fight, a commentator was heard saying that the sluggers were throwing “haymakers” up and down.
Spring Hill College athletics department released a statement on social media regarding the nasty incident. The first Catholic college in the southeast and the third oldest Jesuit college – fifth oldest Catholic college in the United States – mentioned the fact that they were going to take action.
“SHC holds all of our student-athletes and coaches to the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship. What occurred does not reflect the values of our program or institution. We are withholding further comment until the review by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Southern States Athletic Conference and Umpires is complete,” the school said.
