Azzi Fudd isn’t just celebrating a national title-she’s reflecting on something deeper. In the aftermath of UConn’s emotional win over South Carolina, the star guard opened up about a powerful presence she felt during the game: Kobe and Gianna Bryant.
Speaking to TMZ Sports while doing a celebratory shift at Raising Cane’s with teammate KK Arnold, Fudd recalled a spiritual connection that took her by surprise mid-game. “There were a couple scores-24, 8-in the stat line,” she said, referring to Kobe’s iconic jersey numbers. “Someone asked me if I believed in God’s power, and I just knew-that was Kobe. That was Gigi. They were there with us.”
A personal connection to the Bryants
Fudd’s connection to the Bryant family isn’t just symbolic, it’s personal. She trained with Kobe and Gianna in Los Angeles just months before their tragic passing in 2020. Photos from that day now serve as cherished memories of a once-in-a-lifetime mentorship moment that still resonates deeply.
Getting emotional while recalling the images, Fudd was struck by the thought of what might have been. “Gigi would have been a freshman this year,” she reflected, hinting at the incredible path the young Mambacita could have followed.
A tribute from the Bryants’ legacy
After UConn’s victory, Vanessa Bryant took to social media to congratulate Fudd and her teammates. Fudd expressed deep appreciation for the gesture. “Vanessa’s incredible, and so is her entire family,” she said, clearly moved by the acknowledgment.
The tribute meant more than just public praise it felt like a continuation of Kobe’s support for women’s basketball, something he championed passionately. Gigi, a huge UConn fan, dreamed of playing there one day. While that dream ended far too soon, Fudd and her teammates carried her memory with them to the top.
More than just a win
For Fudd, this championship was bigger than basketball. It was a reminder of the people who inspire, even when they’re no longer here.
