Michael van Gerwen crashed out of Players Championship 13 in Rosmalen, Netherlands on Monday, meaning the Dutchman has now suffered four opening-round defeats this year as he continues his struggles on the oche.

The three-time world champion averaged just 85.73 as he suffered a shock 6-4 defeat to Mario Vandenbogaerde, who started the day 69th in the PDC Order of Merit.

Damon Heta emerged victorious as he clinched his first PDC title of 2025 thanks to an 8-6 win over Nathan Aspinall in the final.

The Australian rises to seventh on the PDC Order of Merit as a result, having not lifted silverware for eight months heading into Monday.

Michael van Gerwen has won only eight out of 17 games on the Pro Tour this year

“I didn’t know when my next win was coming, so I’m really stoked to win today,” said Heta.

“For some reason in darts you sometimes get wins when you’re not playing great and don’t get what you deserve when you are playing well.

“I’ve been working on a few things to do with my darts set-up. I’m looking for those one per cents to take my game to the next level.

“I’m a hard worker, I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing and hopefully turn up at the big events and get my rewards.”

Heta opened with wins over Adam Hunt, Berry van Peer and Andy Baetens before beating Jermaine Wattimena to reach the quarter-final, overcoming Karel Sedlacek and Andrew Gilding to set up his clash with Aspinall.

Twins takeaways: Joe Ryan’s poise, Carlos Correa’s hitting and more from 5-1 homestand

MINNEAPOLIS — There was a moment during Joe Ryan’s brilliant seven-inning performance Sunday, his fastball blowing hitters away, when everything could have gone sideways.Facing Los Angeles Angels hitter Logan O’Hoppe with a man on second and two outs in the fourth inning, Ryan threw a perfect 3-2 fastball at the bottom of the strike zone.AdvertisementRyan wasn’t rewarded for his accuracy by home plate umpire Nate Tomlinson, who called it a ball. Missed calls seem to frequently occur when Ryan pitches and they’ve previously led to him getting off track, as was the case in an April 20 Twins loss in Atlanta. But in the middle of his 11-strikeout showing Sunday, Ryan didn’t visibly react to his misfortune. He instead refocused, and with the help of catcher Ryan Jeffers, needed only three pitches to escape the inning with a strikeout of Travis […]

Chevron Championship: Mao Saigo wins 5-woman playoff for first major title

The Chevron Championship reserved all the drama until its final moments.Mao Saigo, a 23-year-old from Japan, emerged from a five-woman playoff — the largest in LPGA major championship history — to win not only her first major, but her first LPGA tournament. It seemed very unlikely that Saigo, the 2024 LPGA Rookie of the Year, would have a chance to win when she had two holes to play — Ariya Jutanugarn had a one-shot lead on the par-5 18th and was playing her third shot out of the rough above the green. A quick chipping motion resulted in her striking the ball and barely moving it, maybe an inch; Jutanugarn remained over the ball and quickly hit again, but the original swing counted as a stroke. She missed a 15-foot par putt, dropped to 7-under, and created the playoff. Hyo Joo Kim […]

Bahia vence no Allianz Parque, tira invencibilidade do Palmeiras
