This marks the second time in his collegiate journey that he has opted for a change of scenery, following a previous stint at Texas Southern.
O’Neal’s time at Florida A&M saw a breakthrough year, making this transfer a pivotal moment in his path forward.
During his one season with the Rattlers, O’Neal made an impact, averaging 6.7 points and 3.4 rebounds in 18 minutes per game.
With 17 starts across 29 appearances, he demonstrated his ability to contribute as a solid wing player, finishing strong at the rim and showing good efficiency with shooting splits of 50.3/37.5/63.5.
O’Neal’s athleticism is perhaps his most notable asset-he’s an explosive slasher, capable of making plays in transition and getting to the basket.
Despite being unranked as a high school recruit, his performance at FAMU and previous experience at Texas Southern have set the stage for his next move.
Shaqir’s transfer opens up possibilities for both O’Neal and potential suitors. His size and skills could appeal to a variety of programs, particularly those looking to strengthen their frontcourt.
A move to nearby Georgia State could offer him the opportunity to stay close to home while helping a team in need of forward depth.
Alternatively, Georgia Southern, another in-state school, could be a viable option, with the Eagles facing roster changes.
Even within the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), O’Neal could find a fit with Southern University, who had a successful 2023 season.
As Shaqir O’Neal looks to take the next step in his college basketball career, it remains to be seen which program will land the young forward and how his continued development will shape his future on the court.
With his talent and athleticism, it seems clear that his journey is far from over.
